PSO picks ups its hardware for CD award

News of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra winning an International Classical Music Award (ICMA) trophy for its Exton recording of Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 came out earlier, but yesterday VP Robert Moir received the hardware at its annual Award Ceremony in Nantes, France. The recording is conducted by music director Manfred Honeck and feature soprano Sunhae.

By the way, Exton just released the PSO's recording of Mahler Symphony No. 5. Like the others, it is clean and powerful, but my personal take is the same as when I heard it in 2011 so I am not going to review it again (these are all live recordings, over 3 concerts in Heinz Hall with a patch session). RIP Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau: Lieder's Leader for six decades

The greatest chamber singer of our time and preeminent singer of German lied, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, died earlier today. He sang with an exquisite understanding of text and vocal expression. I play "Die Schone Mullerin" at least once a year. My he rest in the babbling "Bach ( brook)" in the afterlife.

Katharine McPhee cancels PSO Pops

This will disappoint people, she was the big draw on the Pops 2012-13 season. But she wouldn't be a big draw if she wasn't a big star, and that means the potential of having something else take precedence. Oh well.

The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO) announced today guest artist Katharine

McPhee will not be appearing with the orchestra at the PNC Pops concerts scheduled for Sept. 27-30.

The PSO is working on finding another guest artist for the Sept. 27-30 concerts, which will be led by

Principal Pops Conductor Marvin Hamlisch.

McPhee had to cancel her appearance at the opening weekend of the PNC Pops’ 2012-2013 season

because it conflicts with the production schedule of her hit television series, SMASH. The PSO is

presently working on rescheduling her appearance at Heinz Hall, and will release details when they are

available.

Controversial or not, here is the the Metropolitan Opera “Live in HD” line up for the 2012-13 season:

Summer repeats are Donizetti’s “Anna Bolena” (June 13), Rossini’s “Le

Comte Ory” (June 20), Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” (June 27), Offenbach’s “The Tales of
