P-G classical music critic Andrew Druckenbrod blogs about classical music. |
Sorry. I love the post-mod implications of John Cage's 4'33" (a piece for no playing -- the musicians are silent and you hear the coughing of the audience and the hum of the AC) and I am happy to have a new generation and others learn about it, but I personally feel it's going to far to "arrange" the piece for orchestra. It becomes only a lame comedy act now -- why can't we come up with our own comedic works? Why must we keep squeezing this cool idea again and again until it becomes a mockery of that it once was? And really, it never was all that great -- better in theory than reality...
Here's the New Century Chamber Orchestra under Lawrence Foster. You decide.
