If, five long years ago, you showed up outside the Roberto Clemente statue for a movie shooting in Pittsburgh, you will finally be able to see it this weekend.
Pittsburgh Filmmakers will open "Chasing 3000" at the Harris Theater, 809 Liberty Ave., on Friday. The movie is about a road trip two brothers take in 1972 to witness Roberto Clemente's 3000th hit.
Trevor Morgan plays Mickey, a 16-year-old Pirates fan who resents his family's recent move to California to accommodate his brother, Roger (Rory Culkin), who has muscular dystrophy.
Unhappy with his new surroundings, Mickey steals his mother's car and plans to race across the country to see Clemente's historic moment. His brother, however, wants to come along and when the trip takes a toll on Roger's health, Mickey must reevaluate his priorities.
The movie, directed by Gregory J. Lanesey, incorporates archival footage from the Great One's career. Ray Liotta plays the adult version of one of the brothers. "Chasing 3000," by the way, is based on the true story of screenwriter Bill Mikita and his brother, Steve.
A Post-Gazette story in October 2005 noted that filmmakers had shot crowd scenes at PNC Park but invited fans in Pirate garb to populate crowd scenes.
On Sept. 28, "Chasing 3000" will be available from Maya Entertainment on video on demand along with DVD-Blu-ray. Giant Eagle stores will sell it starting Sept. 26, which also happens to be Pirate Fan Appreciation Day. The Buccos meet the Houston Astros that afternoon.
The movie will screen at the Harris:
Friday, Sept. 3 at 8 p.m.
Saturday, Sept. 4 at 5:30 and 8 p.m.
Sunday, Sept. 5 at 3 p.m.
Monday through Wednesday, Sept. 6-8, at 7:30 p.m.
Thursday, Sept. 9 at 5:30 and 8 p.m.
