Mt. Lebanon, Pa., September 1, 2010 – The Denis Theatre Foundation Board of Directors announced today that it has signed a sales agreement with the current owners of the Denis Theatre, D. and Neeta Raja, to purchase the landmark building on Washington Road in Mt. Lebanon. This milestone was reached as a result of successful capital campaign efforts that began in the fall of 2009.
"We are thrilled to proceed with the purchase and we so appreciate the Rajas' willingness to support this endeavor and move us forward as a community" said Jennifer Smokelin, legal counsel and member of the Board of Directors.
The Denis Theatre, located on the main street in Mt. Lebanon, will be a catalyst for economic development and a hub for cultural activities and community partnerships in the future.
The acquisition of the building is just the first step of this $2.5 million phase of the project, which also includes opening the Encore, the first of three planned screening rooms. To open the Encore in 2012, significant renovations must occur to provide the setting for an intimate state of the art theater.
In a statement, the board expressed its appreciation for the confidence, enthusiasm and generosity of its donors, who share the Denis Theatre Foundation's vision for this landmark theater.
The board, in conjunction with A. L. Brourman Associates Inc., fund raising counsel, is exploring many additional funding sources. The Pittsburgh Foundation's $100,000 grant and an anonymous $155,000 Challenge Grant sparked renewed interest, and the community responded on many levels - financially, with in-kind expertise and with volunteer hours. In the 12 weeks since the challenge was issued, the foundation reports that it has indeed met that challenge by raising the $155,000 needed.
The project recently received a commitment for financing from First Commonwealth Bank, which will provide additional capital to assist the Denis Theatre Foundation as it begins renovations on the building.
Anne Kemerer, citing family reasons, has asked to step down as executive director and will be transitioning to a new role as project advisor. The Board has launched a search for a new executive director.
