This is where I throw myself on the E Street Band altar, admit that I was wrong and beg forgiveness.
When the tour was announced in late January, I wrote "This is the first tour since the death of saxophonist Clarence Clemons, and the E Street Band has decided to go sax-less out of respect to its fallen comrade."
I immediately got an email from a reader named Tom G., who has seen 160+ Springsteen shows, asking me "what 'Inside Information' [do] you have that leads to this conclusion??... At this point there are a number of scenarios for various horns to be included in the show and this includes a good chance for a Saxophone Replacement. At this point, no Final Decisions have been made by Mr. Springsteen or the Band so I am not sure how you already know ??"
I told him that the springsteen.net had the touring band listed and there were no horn players on it.
Tom was right.
Today, the Springsteen camp announced that the E Street Band will be joined by a full horn section, the Miami Horns, that includes Clarence's nephew, Jake Clemons. His bio lists him as having played with the Israelites, Springsteen and Will Smith.
Here is the Miami Horns lineup:
-
Jake Clemons - Saxophone
-
Barry Danielian - Trumpet
-
Clark Gayton - Trombone
-
Eddie Manion - saxophone
-
Curt Ramm - Trumpet
Yep, that's a lot of horns and a lot of sound for the E Street Band to take on (as if it weren't enough of a wall), but it's not the first time. A different version of the Miami Horns toured with Bruce in 1977 and then again on the "Tunnel of Love" tour in 1988.
Reaction on the Springsteen facebook page ranges from "welcome little big man" to "oh, I hate trumpets" to "too bad only scalpers got tickets."
Didn't make the cover,though.
