The voice on the other end of the phone was hoarse and not exactly what I’d expected, and with good reason. Diana DeGarmo was recovering from a car accident last night.
The “American Idol” Season 3 finalist and star of the touring company of “9 to 5: The Musical” was a backseat passenger with a couple of swings, on the way to meet up with cast members of “Rock of Ages.” Both tours have been playing Dallas venues concurrently; “9 to 5’s” next stop is the Benedum Center on May 31.
The car she was in was exiting an interstate and a car ahead of hers had been in a accident and everyone was trying to stop as they sped onto the ramp.
“We were on the exit ramp and everyone started hitting one another and it was a domino effect,” she said. “I turned around to hear tires screeching and just in time to see a semi clip this other car and to say, ‘We’re about to be ...,’ ” and the she made a little “pfft” noise. DeGarmo was still a little groggy this afternoon, with “a good goose egg” bump from hitting the back of her head on the back seat.
Today she tweeted: It's always slightly awkward when the EMT checking you out for injuries recognizes you.... but then it's kinda funny. Welcome to my life. :)
DeGarmo had been nice enough to call back after I’d left a message at the assigned time for the interview. She apologized because she thought she had postponed the chat, and we rescheduled.
In “9 to 5,” DeGarmo, who was just 16 when she was an “AI” contestant in 2004, plays Doralee, the Dolly Parton role from the 1980 movie that inspired the musical.
