On the first day of "American Idol" tryouts in Pittsburgh Wednesday, when a young woman earned her ticket to Hollywood, the celebration included a quick planking by her sister.
"Planking" is sort of social performance art, wherein someone stretches out ramrod straight, horizontally, arms to the side, like a big board or plank. The key is to balance carefully on railings, floors, etc.
"Idol" host Ryan Seacrest was so impressed, he mentioned it on his Twitter account. But that led to a discussion of whether planking is even relevant anymore. More current is "Batmanning" (hanging upside down by one's feet in public places) or even "Owling" (perching like a bird).
"Planking? SO last season," quipped "Idol" judge Randy Jackson at a press conference at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.
"How did the planker do?" Seacrest said, looking for confirmation.
"Girl made it through," replied judge Jennifer Lopez.
At some point, the talk came round to singing and what it means to be in the "City of Champions." J-Lo said Pittsburgh was a fighting town: "We had a lot of fighters who would not go down, so maybe that had something to do with this being the City of Champions, they're not going down without a fight."
