First we have some event news going into August. On Saturday August 14, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Allegheny County is holding the Allegheny Green & Innovation Festival at Hartwood Acres. This is an earth-friendly event with vendors, ideas and even a book swap so make sure you bring a book to trade. It's also kid friendly with activities for the next generation of green beings. Green innovation, robotic “BowGo” pogo stick from CMU and Joe Grushecky & the House Rockers … what more could you want on a Saturday in August!
Now for serious stuff, like how to un-stuff your mailbox. There's an online service called "catalogchoice.org" which will help you whittle down your junk mail and all those catalogs that arrive out of nowhere. Not only can you cut your paper mail, you can option to receive catalog info via email thereby saving quite a few trees in the process.
There's two ways you can go about this, either by company or by creating an account with catalogchoice.org. I went for the create an account method. You can select from over 2,827 companies and there are even quite a few who joined up as volunteers. These are the "cool companies" which are broken down into categories for you to cruise through.
Or you can enter a catalog or mailing you would like to QUIT receiving and set your preferences that will be sent on to the company/publisher. In the interest of fairness I won't name any names but I'm sure there is a few you can think of right off the top of your head.
So now you have the choice to receive or not receive, save a tree, one catalog at a time.
On a totally different note, stop by Doug's garden blog for some weed talk, Agent Orange and the value of a dandelion.
