NOrthShore.2One thing I have found as I become more involved in the green community of Pittsburgh is the amazing souls who volunteer so much of their free time to make our region a better place to live not just now but for the future.

Be it the teacher who goes out after a full day of school to help clear trash from a park area or the student who comes out to mulch trees in a part of town he's never visited before, seems like there is always someone out there helping ... and of course there is always a need for willing bodies for the next action.

Right now there are a couple of volunteers needed for next week's Port of Pittsburgh - Ohio River Watershed Celebration (Sept. 15th from 1 - 6 p.m.). You get to cruise along the Allegheny River aboard the "Empress" while helping students to discover the importance of the rivers.

As we run into fall you will see that there are several postings for tree care days over the next month or so. If you are interested in volunteering, contact Caitlin at the Friends of the Urban Forest. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . While we're on trees, one of the things we can do to help trees and other plants during these dry periods is to mulch. Thing is you want to watch what kind of mulch you use. There are concerns that the harvesting of native
cypress degrades the cypress wetlands along our southern shores. Try contacting your city or municipality and see if they have mulch you can get for free.
