Sara lives north in Armstrong County, between Butler and Kittanning. She saw these pretty orange crocus blooming early. "I actually feel kind of sad that they're showing up this early! I'm not a fan of winter, but it doesn't seem right for spring to arrive in early February. I'm wondering what's going to happen to all the other emerging bulbs if we get some real winter weather in the coming weeks."

"My snow crocus blooming on Sunday 2/5/12 near Irwin, Pa and robin spotted at Seton Hill University in Greensburg, Pa on Monday 2/6/12. I think the groundhog was wrong!!"

What a difference a day makes in my garden, this is why they call them snow crocus and snowdrops.

Marcy has seen lots of things blooming in her garden.
"Here are some early flowers blooming in the yard and woods...really like the lichens and moss photos...they have been green all winter and growing and getting thicker. Crocuses, Primroses, snowdrops, helleborus, flowering quince, Oregon grape holly buds, Black pussy willows, fern spores and moss capsules, ground pine and lots of the moss and lichens on the trees. There is lots growing out there including the bitter cress and mustard garlic."

What's interesting to me, this is the first winter in several where I DIDN'T see a robin despite it being milder than others.
Sara brings up a good point - what happens to the bulbs. Doug can clarify if he likes but I think most bulbs are fine as long as they don't have a bud. This is important because after our arctic frontal passage Friday, we have a cold, wintry weekend. Lows Saturday, Sunday and Monday look to be below average, generally in the teens and highs in the 20s Saturday-Sunday. But, in keeping with the general theme of the winter, we moderate quickly starting Monday.
Snowfall so far this winter at Pittsburgh actually hasn't been too far below average, believe it or not. Should have about 24 inches for the season, so far Pittsburgh is at 19.6 and probably will get a few inches over the next several days. But the warm's the big story so far.
