Meet the PG Interns of Summerburgh

BRADY ASHE: I’ll be working in the features section this summer. I’m heading into my junior year at the University of Dayton, where I major in Communication with a concentration in Journalism. Next year, I will be chief sports writer for Flyer News, the university’s student-run newspaper, after two years in arts and entertainment. Having grown up in the South Hills, I’m an avid Pens, Steelers and Buccos fan, and I look forward to learning even more about the city during my time at the Post-Gazette. I enjoy skiing, wakeboarding, playing guitar, watching TV and reading in my spare time.

RYAN BROWN: The breaking news intern was born in Pittsburgh and has lived in the area his entire life. He is managing editor of his school’s student newspaper, The Advocate, after serving for two years as news editor. Last summer he worked as an intern at the Butler Eagle’s Cranberry subsidiary. Ryan hopes to find a career as a city newspaper reporter; he has a particular interest in crime, politics, and court reporting, as well as investigative reporting. He also enjoys writing his own biography in the third person. Something you might not know: He occasionally appears at formal events in Scottish dress — kilt and all.

JACQUELINE FELDMAN: I’m Jacqueline — Jacque — and I’m an intern this summer with the city desk and features. This fall, I’ll be a senior at Yale, where I major in English, edit a newsmagazine called The New Journal, www.thenewjournalatyale.com and serve on the board of The Yale Literary Magazine. This is my first time in Pittsburgh, and I’m excited to get to know the city.

KELLY LIPOVICH: I’m the sole art intern this summer. I’ll be a senior in the fall at Kent State, where I design for the daily student paper and various magazines. I grew up in Mars, Pa, so it’s been fun to experience Pittsburgh classics like Primanti’s with the out-of-town interns. I enjoy baking, painting, reading, following Pittsburgh sports and watching movies.

CHARLIE MAGOVERN: I’ll be working in the sports section this summer. I’m a Communication Arts major at Allegheny College and just finished my junior year up in Meadville, Pa. I grew up in suburban Pittsburgh, but I’m living in the city for the summer and hope to find new things to do in my hometown while learning how to write like a pro. I’m fluent in quoting “The Office,” and will laugh at anything remotely funny even (and sometimes especially) if I’ve already seen it way too many times. Something you might not know about me: I can juggle.

EDGAR RAMIREZ: I just graduated from Penn State University (WE ARE) with a degree in Journalism and minor in Latino/Latina Studies. I’m from Lafayette, Ind., so please excuse my naiveness to Pittsburgh city life after spending the majority of my 22 years in smalltown settings. I’m terrible with following maps or directions, so already I can tell I’m in the right city to learn how to get over that — thankfully I won’t have to travel much since the majority of the time I’ll be sitting in a desk, proofing pages and editing stories as a copy editor under the Dow Jones News Fund. In my spare time I like to run, read, write, people-watch, and watch sports (except for golf and NASCAR. Those aren’t real sports).

Alison_Griswold ALISON GRISWOLD: Hi, I'm Ali Griswold and I'll be a junior at Yale this fall, majoring in English. I am a staff reporter for the Yale Daily News and have covered everything from the university endowment to our nationally ranked men's hockey team. I also love to run, and will probably try to convince you to join me sometime.

JOEY NOLFI: I’m a features intern this summer working primarily in arts and entertainment. I was born and raised here in the city and I’m heading into my senior year at the University of Pittsburgh, where I’m majoring in Film Studies with concentrations in Fine Arts and Nonfiction Writing. I’m an avid Lady Gaga fanatic, amusement park enthusiast and cinema junkie. I’ve written for school papers, local fashion magazines, and I also have a personal blog. My interest is mainly doing film reviews, but I love interviewing entertainers as well. I hope to end up in LA writing for a major film or entertainment publication. I’ve also done modeling and acting: I’m on MTV now in Mac Miller’s "Knock Knock" music video, holla!).

CRAIG MEYER: I am working on a degree in news/editorial journalism with a minor in history at Boston University, and although it may be a tad cliche, I find it astonishing and overwhelming to think that this time next year, I will be a college graduate. I was born and lived in Louisville, Ky., until I went off to college a few years ago. Misconceptions and crude stereotypes of Kentucky aside, I loved growing up in Louisville and always enjoy going back. But when it came time to apply for college, I felt that I needed to leave my comfort zone. Obviously, I'm excited for the chance to be able to work and gain valuable experience at the Post-Gazette, but I'm also looking forward to spending some time in Pittsburgh itself. I will be interning in the sports department, which is perfect for me because I hope to one day become a sportswriter. I've held on to many of my hometown/regional allegiances, as I am a big fan of University of Louisville football and basketball, the Chicago Bulls and the Cincinnati Reds.

NIA PHILLIPS: I'm a rising senior at Wellesley College, studying Political Science and Spanish. I am also a Pittsburgh resident and excited to spend the summer in the city after spending four months studying abroad in Spain. I'm an intern in the Multimedia department and hope that this experience will help me discover a career path that will combine many interests: European pop music, sports, playing jazz piano, reading, creative writing, and a really good scoop (or two) of ice cream. Something you should know about Nia: Although I was born in Boston and study there, I am a very big Steelers fan and to prove this I keep two Terrible Towels in my dorm room and wear a Steelers jersey to the library on Sundays during football season.
