The Coraopolis Train Station is the No. 1 preservation opportunity identified in this year’s Top 10 of the Young Preservationists Association of Pittsburgh. Every year the group presents its Top 10 both to encourage preservation of the sites and to encourage preservation sensibilities in general.

Its motto is: "Old is the new green."

YPA has been counting down this year’s Top 10 at http://youngpreservationistsassociation.blogspot.com/ and announced them tonight at a Preservation Month celebration at the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater in East Liberty.

For the first time this year, YPA also has published a report it calls “Homage to the Fallen,” a list of the “Top Ten Buildings We Wish We Had Back,” said Dan Holland, founder of the YPA. That list includes the magnificent Wabash Terminal Downtown, the Syria Mosque in Oakland and the Allegheny Markethouse on the North Side. The Pittsburgh Brewing Co. in Lawrenceville, the Ambridge Theater in Ambridge and Gladstone Elementary in Hazelwood are among the YPA’s Top 10 buildings that should be saved. The brewing company complex has been designed an historic property by the city (except for a ‘70s-era building the owner wants to demolish).

Now all this effort needs is some people to invest in future uses for these historic prizes. May they be relics no more!
