A reader in Friendship sent me photos the other day that, if they’d been of people, the police would be on a manhunt for a suspect and the headline in the tabloids would read: treehacked

TREES HACKED TO PIECES!!!!!!!!!!!

LEFT FOR DEAD!!!!!!

Our reader, who is sickened like me, says he suspects a utility company. We will withhold all judgment until we can find the culprits.

If you know and can prove who might have been whacking trees so brutally — he said about a dozen of them have been cut up this way on Fairmount, Coral, and Stratford streets -- I am itching to know.

Jeez ... this is a way of life all through the East End, and Duquesne Light is the culprit. They cut to make room for their power lines -- the tree be damned. See Linden Avenue, Reynolds Street, South Braddock, etc., etc.

Yes, Diana, it was the power company. That's my home across the street. They had told me they were going to trim the trees, and I have had discussion with them before, but was not present when the damage was done. I could not have imagined they would remove as much as they did. Needless to say, we are heartsick.

*t's one of those sad things where somebody's got to lose, and it's always the tree that gets it. In Pittsburgh, both the power poles and some of our finest trees tend to be situated in that strip of grass between the sidewalk and the street ... so the trees and the power lines are often competing for the same vertical space. This cutting tactic must have been in force for decades because there are dozens of such mutilated Y-shaped trees in Regent Square that have to have been "trimmed" this way many, many years ago.
