Being called a “mature” adult is one of those wincing milestones. Yeah, OK, so I clearly can’t do cartwheels anymore and you can see that.

There are rewards, though, for people who have reached the half-century mark. OASIS is one of them, an organization that provides mature adults opportunities “to learn, grow and connect.”

I was at the Friday farmer’s market in Allegheny Commons Park last week when OASIS’ executive director Gail Weisberg handed me a flier. Earlier in the week, I had received an OASIS catalog in my mailbox at work. Hmm. My highlights must be growng out.

No, no, seriously, being over 50 is a wonderful gift. You stop caring whether anyone notices the stains on your blouse or if your hair’s sticking up. And you realize by 50 that you know less than you thought you did.

So, you can take classes... a free class on haiku, a $6 class on Bollywood, a Japanese tea ceremony for $15, a quilting group for free, a $12 class on the Supreme Court. You can take day trips such as a tour of steel heritage sites for $66... there’s so much in this catalog. Ballroom dancing, computer literacy, financial advice, how 2 txt, dream interpretation, art appreciation. There’s even a class on Fred Astaire for a cool, elegant seven buckeroos.

Classes start next month. Some are one session for an hour, some are the first Monday or the fourth Wednesday. The Allegheny County Area Agency of Aging (argh! that word!) and Macy’s Foundation are sponsors. Visit www.oasisnet.org/pittsburgh or call 412.232.2020 for more information.
