Ties between Duquesne University and Africa will be explored and celebrated during Founders Week Feb. 1-5 at the Catholic school in Uptown.
The Spiritan priests who founded and run Duquesne founded the school to serve immigrants to Pittsburgh. At the same time, they founded missions to Africa. Many of the priests stationed at Duquesne are veterans of those African missions and quite a few young, African priests do their doctoral studies at Duquesne.
Today students regularly accompany faculty and staff to Spiritan missions in Tanzania, Uganda, Ghana and other nations. They collaborate with Spiritan parishes schools and hospitals to promote health care, education and the Catholic faith. They arrange for shipments of medical supplies to hospitals and clinics; they do research and education on occupational therapy in African settings and also do research and education on environmental concerns.
Campus minister Luci-Jo DiMaggio will talk about these ties on Wed. Feb. 1 at noon in the Africa Room of the Duquesne Union. The talk is free and open to everyone.
