This announcement from PennDOT doesn't bode well for I-79 travelers headed to Erie or other points north. The entire 26-mile length of the highway in Mercer County is going to be under construction for the next two years, starting soon:
PennDOT has awarded a $19,249,079 contract to Lindy Paving Inc. of New Castle for the rehabilitation of Interstate 79 in both the northbound and southbound directions in from the Lawrence/Mercer County line to the Mercer/Crawford County line for a total project length of 26 miles in Mercer County. The work includes the milling and resurfacing of the roadway pavement/shoulders and interchange ramps. Work also includes the rehabilitation of 16 structures within the limits of the project as well as pavement base repairs, guide rail updates, signing, and pavement markings.
The project will require two construction seasons to complete. Construction activities will begin the week of August 9, 2010, and will suspend for winter in late October. Proposed work for the 2010 season will include bituminous base repairs, structure rehabilitation, and temporary repairs to maintain the roadway/bridge surface over the winter.
All lanes will be open to normal traffic during the winter suspension period.
Work will resume in early April 2011 and should be complete by October 2011. Proposed work in 2011 includes milling and paving of the roadway and interchange ramps.
Traffic will be maintained in a single lane in each direction. The project is limited to six mile work zones followed by five miles of normal traffic patterns. Motorists may encounter up to three simultaneous work zones in each directional lane.
Normal traffic patterns are required during the holiday periods and weekends that have no scheduled construction activities. Weekend lane closures may be needed due to concrete curing requirements for structure rehabilitation.
Traffic is maintained in a single lane in each direction with no detours. Wide loads will be restricted. Congestion and delays are possible in periods of high traffic volume.
PennDOT encourages motorists to log on to 511pa.com or to call 511 from any phone to check traffic conditions before traveling.
