Chelsea Clinton, daughter of two leftist liberal people reviled by the right wing, weds a successful, young Wall Street financier in a wedding not forced by pregnancy, but by a long-term relationship based on love and respect. Not to be outdone by her husband, Chelsea, who was the butt of jokes by the right wingers during the Clinton administration, is herself a person who can and will contribute to society, being no less than an honors graduate of Stanford, as well as the holder of two master's degrees, from Oxford and Columbia.
Contrast that with Bristol Palin, daughter of Sarah Palin, the darling of the right wing and keeper of conservative family values. She is an unwed mother with no education or skills to speak of other than pandering to the Christian base and planning to marry her equally underachieving boyfriend. Of course, being good conservatives, the right-wing Christians tell us we must offer her understanding and support. I seriously doubt that Chelsea would have received the same treatment from them.
Ignoring the facts, much of the American public, which apparently strives for mediocrity and adores blatant opportunists, will continue to ridicule the Clinton family and respect people like the Palins. If that doesn't tell us the great American experiment is spiraling into the ash heap of history, nothing will.
