Heed his warning

I was thrilled when I saw that Glenn Beck's Restoring Honor Rally was featured on the front page of last Sunday's paper ("Thousands Fill National Mall for 'Honor' Rally," Aug. 29). This rally honored our military and encouraged the American people to turn back to God. The fact that so many people attended speaks to their love and concern for our great country. Many more watched online and on TV.

Then I was truly dismayed when I turned to Page B-2 and saw the mean-spirited cartoon" depicting Glenn Beck as a "rotten egg.

Glenn Beck is a man who seeks the truth and tells the truth. He is warning the country to wake up and see what is happening in Washington. As he said at the rally, he does not feel he deserves to be called a fear-monger. He is warning us that there is an iceberg up ahead.

I am not alone in believing that Glenn Beck is a man of God who has been sent to educate us. I pray we will heed his warning before it is too late.

Shame on you for publishing such a despicable cartoon regarding Glenn Beck last Sunday. If there is a rotten egg to be recalled it is the PG's editorial cartoonist, Rob Rogers.

Majority, speak up

Leonard Pitts Jr. nailed Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin and what is happening in this country in his column (" 'We' Is Not Glenn Beck") and Rob Rogers illustrated it in his cartoon in the Aug. 27 Post-Gazette.

Many are the times that this vocal, often hate-filled minority (pick your topic: African-Americans, President Barack Obama in particular; Muslims, with no recognition of the moderates who decry the radicals; liberals, who include me and some of my family; immigrants, no matter what they left behind; non-evangelical Christians, no matter the depth of our devotion to our Triune God) have made me feel downright embarrassed about the picture we present to the world.

One of their mantras is to return this country to its beginnings as a Christian nation. When they start behaving in a Christian manner -- the manner I have been taught from childhood signifies a deep and committed faith -- then I will believe they are what they yell about so loudly -- and often rudely. I fervently wish they would pipe down, and those of us who cannot stand their uproar find our voices of moderation to let the world know they do not speak for us!

"I could give a flying crap about the political process." Making money, on the other hand, is to be taken very seriously, and controversy is its own coinage. "We're an entertainment company," Beck said on April 8, 2010.

It's no wonder that his DC "rally" was all about religion. Funny that Beck is a mormom preaching "christian" values.

You've already been screwed "super" - what you may not be old enough to know is that after Reagan cut taxes on the wealthy, he raised taxes 7 times which included a doubling of the social security withholding tax - funny that since it was doubled,republicans have been trying to kill SS for decades

Obama has actually accomplished a lot and already far more than Bush/Cheney. The GOP however has done nothing to help things along given they set the house on fire.

So, tell me "super" 3 million jobs under Bush/Cheney and 23 million jobs under Clinton.

Which one is better for the US ?

Bush/Cheney at the very least doubled the national debt and left a 1.2 trillion dollar deficit before Obama was even sworn in.

How is that better for the US ?

This is of course after 12 years of republican administrations quadrupled the debt from Reagan/Bush 1 - Bush 1 / Quayle. Fact.

Last President to balance a budget ? Clinton.

Supply-side econ has falied miserably as wages for americans have stagnated for decades

Actually, Beck's religion is his own business. That said, a lot of his followers are "fundementalist" Christians who would find Morman theology heretical (Christ and Satan are brothers?), so he cynically avoids directly talking about what he believes specifically--it wouldn't help him "sell".

The guy will do what he is told. I used to be a fan of DXing long-distance stations, both AM and shortwave. When he just had a local show in NY, he wasn't nearly as radical-sounding as he is now. I used to tune him in to listen to relatively moderate conversation on Sunday evening.

He will modify his message, depending on who's paying him, and with Rupert Murdock, he has hit the jackpot.

BigGuy I read the link you offered. From the Wall Street Journal, no less, it shows that Democrat Presidents have been better at job creation than have Republican ones. Even the frequently lambasted Jimmy Carter had more jobs created per year during his term than Reagan did during his two. Of course, The WSJ is known for the liberal crap they advocate so you better be skeptical.

Ms Short needs to relearn the definition of truth because truth is something pretty foreign to Beck. Simply watch The Daily Show where Jon Stewart shows clips from Beck FoxNews farce where he contradicts himself or pushes lies. If you don't trust The Daily Show, go to Factcheck.org or Politifact which often examine Beck's rants for factual content. And he frequently fails. Lest anyone think these sites are biased, there are a long list of liberal claims which have also been debunked by them.
Beck is double-ironic. He preaches christianity while spewing the most unchristian rhetoric imaginable like intolerance, greedily seeking wealth at the expense of others and in many cases pure hate. And while he often likens those he attacks to Nazis, his rally and its blind patriotic appeal and his constant repetition of the big lie, are reminiscent of everyone's favorite Nazi, good old Adolph himself, and the methods he used to drive Germany off the deep end.

Rob Rogers depicted Beck as a rotten egg? That's terrible. The worst thing you can get from rotten eggs is salmonella. What Beck spreads is much more invidious.

Beck and Schultz is no comparison at all.

As far as Fox and MSNBC

Let me know when Fox lets a dem have a 3 hour show like republican Joe Scarborough does on MSNBC.

Schultz has a far greater grasp of truth than Beck on his worst day.

Beck and his corporate masters are duping the low information voters through his interpretation of "christianity and the founding fathers"

lastly, there is little good in Beck's message and his chalkboard is McCarthyism at its best.

What Beck really can't stand is democracy. When he says restoring honor, he means overriding the voice of the people, who voted overwhelming for Obama.  In his world view, there are Real Americans, who voices should be heard.  The rest need to be silenced, as their views are harmful to society. 

Honor comes from respecting the will of people even when you personally oppose the result. Democracy is the bedrock of America, which Beck and Ms. Short conveniently ignore.

"Honor comes from respecting the will of people even when you personally oppose the result"; really? So what's up with the healthcare bill that got rammed through Congress, hmm? The one a majority of us oppose? The one that was enacted despite the "will of the people" by the same folks that align themselves against Mr. Beck? By your own dewcription, that sounds a bit less than "democratic"....
