Regarding "Get Rid of the Political Parties" (Jan. 29 Forum): I couldn't agree more. A solid first step in Pennsylvania would be to replace the "closed" primary with either an "open" primary (no restriction by party on whom to vote for) or a "top two" primary (candidates are not listed or restricted by party. The top two vote getters face off in the general election. California has this primary system).
We must begin to leave the Dark Ages in Pennsylvania politics and bring more opportunity to qualified candidates for office, which will in turn bring new ideas and approaches to our multitude of troubles. I urge our Pennsylvania legislators to present a primary change as a referendum in an upcoming election.

Independent voters would be able to vote in the primaries instead of being locked out.
