A federal judge overturned Proposition 8 in California, much to the dismay of gay marriage bashers everywhere. Now it will probably wind it's way up to the Supreme Court where Prop 8's Constitutionality will be put to the test. In my opinion, the right to a same-sex wedding should be protected under the Constitution, not the right to vote for bigoted legislation.

Hate and bigotry - a marriage made in hell.

Rob, there is so much of that "flu" going around, it's hard to know which is making us sicker. And we are sick to death from these germs of fear.

And I do think it's fear that generates all that is hate and bigotry. We fear what we don't understand. We hate that which is "different".

I wish I knew how to make it go away. How to make it better.

But I fear that "two aspirins and to bed" won't be making us better any time soon.

Note to myreply: You must be familiar with how the RIGHT uses issues like this as a wedge issue.
Its a great cartoon. It says a lot about how bigotry and hate are reflective in our society.

deke:

Please re-read my earlier post. Of course, I understand how "both" sides use this as a "wedge issue".

Read more than the "words" - try and understand the meaning behind them.

If you want to make it better than you must come to grips with the fact that your side lost the election by a wide margin; and that Sarah Palin tore off the scab from the old wound of racism with her derogatory. speeches.

Thanks, guys. I agree with both of you. Myreply, I agree that hatred and bigotry have been around as long as politics and that fear is the reason for it. I agree with Deke that in terms of tolerance for same-sex couples, the conservatives have shown themselves to be motivated by fear more than liberals.

The "save traditional marriage" argument is code for homophobic.

Love this!!! I just wish those so strongly opposed to same sex marriage could explain exactly how it affects their lives. The "it's tradition" and "the bible says" explanations just don't cut it. I truly don't get it. Thanks for the great work!!

Sorry, but I don't agree with the "code" thing. It sounds like a conspiracy, for goodness sake. There is no conspiracy.

Young people think nothing of same sex marriage - it's much like race. They came up in a different era. It is probably a bit more tenuous for older folks - much like as in race.

Over time, same sex marriage will not be an issue.

I don't think it wrong to want to marry someone you love - and I'm a conservative. I know other conservatives who feel the same way I do. I betcha a lot of liberals don't like the idea of same sex marriage. It is never all of one group. That's where saying one or the other is more against something - it mostly isn't true.

It is bias to call those that think marriage should be between a man and a woman "homophobic". How do we ever change race or this issue if we keep calling people names? And how do we ever have a conversation if everything is in code? (sorry, that's just plain silly)

Tell me how we change these views, if we don't change the way we react to the differences.

Will code rings be showing up in my cereal boxes again?

Hey that's one cartoon for you Rob! NOT.

Roseanne:

It doesn't affect their lives, but:

Change is definately hard. As I have said previously, over time same sex marriage will not be an issue. It will be like all other social changes in this country.

Let me use this example:

The issue of abortion is highly inflammatory. Neither side is right or wrong, but it brings out the worst and the best in the people debating it.

This is how I see this issue (same sex marriage)

But change will come. Of that I am sure.
