The hope of the Arab Spring that blossomed in 2011 has been somewhat marred by recent events in the Middle East. 74 people were killed in the violent aftermath of a soccer game in Egypt. Some say this was a result of the leadership and security vacuum left over after Mubarak's ouster a year ago. Meanwhile, in Syria, President Assad's military crackdown on dissenters has left scores civilians dead.
