MORGANTOWN, W.Va.
Here is the latest on what looks to be a secondary rule violation within the WVU football program.
Is this the biggest deal in the world? If you remove it from everything else, take it on its own merits, probably not.Check that, definitely not.
But, when you factor in what happened last week -- you know, with the NCAA dropping some meaty stuff on the Mountaineers -- this is an issue. A pretty decent-sized issue.
Does it fall on the coaching staff? Not as much as one would think --- at least that's the thought here. This is something that falls on the compliance office of the athletic department. A compliance office that had a member of its staff at practice on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, but, quizzically, not on Saturday.
And, looking back, this was a graph I wrote on a story that appeared in Sunday's paper, written from Saturday's practice session:
"Curiously, though, there was no member of the West Virginia University athletic department compliance staff on hand to monitor the practice, a safeguard one might expect after such accusations were recently levied against the program."
Also, for those of you curious, here is a video from Saturday shot by Charleston Daily Mail reporter Mike Casazza, which served as the springboard for the inquiry behind all of this.
