West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith, who ended his sophomore season on Tuesday night with a 23-7 loss against North Carolina State in the Champs Sports Bowl, will need surgery in January to repair a stress fracture in his left foot.
Football program trainer Dave Kerns confirmed that Smith, who has suffered stress fractures in the same foot two years running, played all season hobbled by the stress fracture.
Smith missed last spring practice after having surgery to repair a stress fracture in the same foot and his status for this upcoming spring practice will not be known until after the surgery next month.

I'm a Pitt fan, but I want WVU to do well.
This does not bode well for the Big Least; I hope Connecticut can keep the score under 50.
Didn't know Stew was a figurehead next year. He has no control over the offense or the defense. So, what does he do all game? What does he do at halftime, or during practices? At least he can boss the Special Teams coach and ball boys around.
It's gonna make for a really odd situation.
I was hoping that Stew would have either told Ollie to stick it, and walked, or said 'fire me'.
At least Wanny is making Pederson twist in the wind, so to speak, by refusing to coach in the Toilet Bowl.
