Penguins

-Who says figure skating isn't dangerous? Former Penguins forward George Laraque, currently a contestant on "Battle of the Blades," a figure skating version of "Dancing with the Stars," took a skate to the face during practice:

-Happy 38th birthday to former Penguins forward Rusty Fitzgerald. A second-round pick in 1991, Fitzgerald spent parts of two seasons with the Penguins. As a rookie in 1994-95, Fitzgerald appeared in four games and scored one goal. He played in five playoff games that spring and failed to record a point. His only other NHL season was 1995-96. He saw action in 21 games and scored three points. After missing all of 1996-97 and much of 1997-98 due to a knee injury, Fitzgerald joined the Quad City Mallards of the UHL in the 1998 offseason. In 25 regular season games with the Penguins, Fitzgerald scored four points.

-Happy 70th birthday to former Penguins forward Vic Hadfield (right). Acquired from the Rangers in the 1974 offseason in a deal with sent Nick Beverly to New York, Hadfield spent parts of three seasons in Pittsburgh. In 1974-75, Hadfield played in 78 games and was third on the team in goals (31) and fourth in points (78). In that spring's postseason, he saw action in nine games and contributed six goals. Hadfield appeared in 76 games in 1975-76 and scored 31 goals and 65 assists. In the 1976 postseason, he scored one goal in three games. Hadfield's final NHL season was 1976-77. He was limited to nine games and two assists. He retired in the 1977 offseason. In 163 regular season games, Hadfield scored 140 points, 54th-most in franchise history. He currently owns a golfing center which bares his name in Oakville, Ont.

Atlantic Division

-"I think in the end, maybe I didn't have the best of preseasons." - Former Penguins forward Bill Guerin who is in the Flyers' camp on a tryout basis.

-The Rangers demoted defensemen, Ryan McDonagh, Pavel Valentenko, forwards Dale Weise and Mats Zuccarello to Hartford of the AHL.

Northeast Division

-Drew Stafford had a goal and three assists for the Sabres in a 9-3 rout of the Flyers. Derek Roy added a two goals and assist for Buffalo while teammate Jason Pominville contributed a goal and two assists. Ryan Miller made 14 saves in the victory.

-Buffalo's Rob Niedermayer kicked up some snow here:

-Bill Guerin fending off a stick check from Buffalo's Tyler Ennis:

-Canadiens forward Michael Cammalleri will have a disciplinary hearing with the NHL over a bit of a hachet job he pulled on Islanders forward Nino Niederreiter Saturday:

-Bruins captain Zdeno Chara, a native of Slovakia, is home (sort of) in Prague.

-Former Penguin the great Mike Zigomanis' abilities in the faceoff circle are giving him a chance at making the Maple Leafs' NHL roster.

Southeast Division

-The Panthers demoted goaltender Jacob Markstrom to Rochester and placed forwards Michael Grabner, Andrew Peters and defenseman Joe Callahan on waivers.

Central Division

-Pekka Rinne made 22 saves and led the Predators to a 3-0 shutout of the Capitals. Joel Ward (above) led Nashville with two goals while teammate Cal O'Reilly contributed a goal and an assist.

-Nashville's Francis Bouillon > Washington's Mathieu Perreault:

-Tomas Kopecky and Jonathan Toews each had a goal and an assist for the Blackhawks in a 4-3 win against the rival Blues. Marty Turco made 20 saves in the victory.

-The Blues recalled forwards T.J. Hensick, Ryan Reaves, David Spina and defenseman Dean Arsene from Peoria of the AHL.

-The Red Wings demoted forwards Joakim Andersson, Willie Coetzee, Cory Emmerton, Chris Minard (a former Penguin), Jordan Owens, Francis Pare, Brendan Smith, Jamie Tardif, Tomas Tatar, defensemen Brian Lashoff, Logan Pyett and goaltender Thomas McCollum to Grand Rapids of the AHL.

-Detroit hired recently cut forward Aaron Downey as a strength and conditioning coach with Grand Rapids.

Northwest Division

-Miikka Kiprusoff made 27 saves for the Flames in a 1-0 shutout of the rival Oilers.

-Check out the hit Cagary's Rene Bourque stuck on Edmonton's Ladislav Smid:

-The Flames demoted forwards John Armstrong,  Jon Rheault and goaltender Leland Irving to the Abbotsford of the AHL.

-The Canucks demoted forwards Victor Oreskovich, Sergei Shirokov, Bill Sweatt, defensemen Lee Sweatt and Yann Sauve to Manitoba of the AHL.

-Vancouver also released forward Brendan Morrison who was in camp on a tryout basis.

-The Avalanche demoted forwards Ryan Stoa, Patrick Bordeleau and defenseman Colby Cohen to Lake Erie of the AHL.

Pacific Division

-An overtime goal by Teemu Selanne gave the Ducks a 3-2 win against the rival Kings. Teammate Ryan Getzlaf (above, shooting on Los Angeles' Jonathan Bernier) added a goal and an assist while Jonas Hiller made a whopping 41 saves in the victory. Justin Williams led Los Angeles with a goal and an assist.

-Selanne and former Penguin Rob Scuderi battling for a puck:

-Anaheim's Sheldon Brookbank and Los Angeles' Kyle Clifford had issues:

-Los Angeles' Drew Doughty being popular:

-Kings forward and former Penguin Alexei Ponikarovsky got some torque on his stick here:

-The Ducks named Getzlaf as the eighth captain in franchise history.

-Coyotes forward and former Penguin Paul Bissonnette wants to contribute more than just his fists.

Norris Division

-Former Maple Leafs/Canucks forward Kyle Wellwood has joined Atlant Moscow Oblast of the KHL.
