Penguins

-Here's the tribute video the Penguins played Thursday for late public address announcer John Barbero:

-Thursday's game drew the largest regular season audience in Versus' history (PG+).

-The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, who open their season at home tonight against the rival Hershey Bears, announced their final roster:

Forward - Jesse Boulerice, Chris Collins, Chris Conner, Ryan Craig, Joey Haddad, Dustin Jeffrey, Nick Johnson, Bryan Lerg, Nick Petersen, Ryan Schnell, Zach Sill, Brett Sterling, Keven Veilleux, Joe Vitale, Geoff Walker, Tim Wallace.
Defensemen - Robert Bortuzzo, Jason DeSantis, Drew Fata, Andrew Hutchinson, Corey Potter, Carl Sneep, Brian Strait, Steve Wagner.
Goaltenders - John Curry, Mattias Modig, Brad Thiessen.

-Jonathan Bombulie of the Citizens Voice in Wilkes-Barre has a look at some line combinations.

-Wilkes-Barre/Scranton coach John Hynes said there is an open competition between Curry and Thiessen.

-Sterling is the AHL Penguins' new sniper.

-Dan Henningson and Ben Street each had a goal and an assist for the Wheeling Nailers in a 4-1 preseason defeat of the Cincinnati Cyclones. Andrew Orpik added two assists while Patrick Killeen made 25 saves in the victory.

Atlantic Division

-Can the Rangers really get by with former Penguin Erik Christensen (right) as their No. 1 center?

-New York Jets coach Rex Ryan will drop the $#&$ing puck at tonight's Stars-Islanders game at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

-The Islanders have a new and unique radio broadcasting arangement. They will have Hofstra University's station, WRHU-FM, broadcast the games and provide students as on-air talent.

-The Devils recalled defenseman Matt Taormina from Albany of the AHL and demoted forward Adam Henrique to Albany.

-Flyers goaltender Michael Leighton will undergo back surgery Monday.

Northeast Division

-Two goals by Derek Roy led the Sabres to a 2-1 defeat of the rival Senators. Teammate Tyler Ennis added two assists while Ryan Miller (above) made 27 saves in the victory. In his debut with the Senators, former Penguins defenseman Sergei Gonchar had 28:25 of ice time, attempted one shot and was a plus-1. Fire Ray Shero.

-Play-by-play announcer Rick Jeanneret began his 39th year with the Sabres last night.

Southeast Division

-Two goals by Evander Kane helped the Thrashers beat the Capitals, 4-2. Chris Mason (above) made 29 saves in the win.

-The story of the night was Thrashers goaltender Ondrej Pavelec who lost consciousness and collapsed in the opening minutes of the game. Pavelec later regained consciousness and was in stable condition at a hospital. There was no word as to what caused the collapse.

-Scary times for Pavelec:

-One of Kane's goal came on a penalty shot:

-How do you like that? Washington's Mike Green finally play some defense and he gets penalized?

-Atlanta's Penguin Chris Thorburn (right) and Fredrik Modin had a laugh after asking Washington's Alexander Semin if he knew what "special" meant:

-A shootout goal by Jeff Skinner, Carolina's first-round pick this summer, gave the Hurricanes a 2-1 win against the Wild in Helsinki. Skinner also had an assist while Cam Ward made a whopping 41 saves in the victory.

-The Panthers are trying to avoid becoming the first team in NHL history to miss the playoffs for 10 consecutive years.

-Capitals owner Ted Leonsis proclaimed Washington as "America's Hockey Capital." Minneapolis, Detroit, Boston, Buffalo, Denver, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia not available for comment.

Central Division

-Jimmy Howard made 21 saves and led the Red Wings to a 4-0 shutout of the Ducks. Dan Cleary and Pavel Datsyuk each contributed a goal and an assist while Mike Modano (above) scored a goal in his Detroit debut.

-Datsyuk actually ended up getting a Gordie Howe Hat Trick when he got into a surprising fight with Ducks forward Corey Perry:

-A good look at the fight:

-"Too bad for him. He can’t win the Lady Byng now." - Red Wings coach Mike Babcock on Datsyuk who has won the award, given out gentlemanly play, four times.

-It wasn't all bad for Anaheim goaltender Jonas Hiller. Check out this save on Detroit's Jiri Hudler:

Northwest Division

-The Canucks are expected to announce Henrik Sedin as their next captain today.

-Vancouver recalled forward Alexandre Bolduc, Jeff Tambellini and goaltender Cory Schneider from Manitoba of the AHL and demoted forwards Cody Hodgson, Lee Sweatt and goaltender Eddie Lack to Manitoba.

-"Use your &$#@ing heads." - Flames coach Brent Sutter to his team a day after it was shut out, 4-0, by the rival Oilers.

-A day after getting knocked out in a fight with Edmonton's Steve McIntyre, Flames tough guy Raitis Ivanans returned to practice.

-Wild defenseman Marek Zidlicky missed his second consecutive game due to a groin injury.

Pacific Division

-Two goals by Loui Eriksson, including one in overtime, gave the Stars a 4-3 win at New Jersey. Brad Richards (above, with Eriksson) added a goal and an assist for Dallas while teammate James Neal recorded two assists. Kari Lehtonen made 27 saves in the victory. Travis Zajac led the Devils with a goal and an assist.

-The Kings are teaming new defenseman Willie Mitchell with Norris Trophy candidate Drew Doughty.

-Kings coach Terry Murray described new forward and former Penguin Alexei Ponikarovsky as "a well-rounded player." Ray Shero not available for comment.

Adams Division

-The next time you want to complain about Marc-Andre Fleury, call up this video of former Lightning goaltender Karri Ramo, now of Avangard Omsk, giving up a long range goal in the KHL recently:

-The Robert Morris men's team opens it season tonight at American International.

-Kristen DiCiocco made 26 saves for the Robert Morris women's team in a 4-1 loss to Ohio State.

-Happy 67th birthday to former Pittsburgh Hornets defenseman Bert Marshall.

Not to beat a dead horse, but with an audience like that Versus chooses to show an unknown Canadian band in Canada instead of the opening ceremonies from Pittsburgh, a group of Flyers fans in lockup in Philadelphia, or say a Cup party in Chicago? hello?
