PREGAME
-You are reading live from another brilliant, crisp, slightly cloudy day in Pittsburgh. It's in the mid 60s with a slight bit of moisture in the air. It's apparently good enough for these geese:

-Their scratches are Zbynek Michalek, Craig Adams and Brooks Orpik.
-Adams' consecutive games streak of 86 games comes to an end. It was the longest active streak on the team.
-Mark Letestu will center the fourth line.
-The Islanders' starters are former Penguins prospect Matt Moulson, former Penguin Jon Sim, Zenon Konopka at forward, former Penguin Mark Eaton, Radek Martinek on defense and Rick DiPietro in goal.
-When Eaton is announced as a starter, he is given a brief applause. He is serving as an alternate captain.
-The Islanders' scratches are Bruno Gervais, James Wisniewski and John Tavares.
FIRST PERIOD
18:25: Doug Weight rockets a half slapper form the left circle wide on the far side.
18:13: Off a faceoff win, Martinek puts a shot on net from the right point. Johnson boots it out with a "thud."
17:31: Eric Godard gets into his first fight of the season with Trevor Gillies. They circle each around the New York blue line for a few seconds before locking up. Godard lands five or six quick rabbit punches with his right. Gilles holds him off. Godard then lands a few sizable shots with his left. Gilles throws a few but doesn't appear to connect. Finally, Godard looses his footing and Gilles holds off from throwing any punches. Good form by Gilles there to hold up. Also good form is the "Mother" by Glen Danzig which is played during the bout:
16:24: Mike Mottau picks up a loose puck in the right circle and whips it on net. Johnson boots it out with his right leg.
15:52: Off a faceoff win in the left circle, Paul Martin snaps off a wrister from the left point which DiPietro snags despite traffic.
15:41: Crosby circles behind the New York net and attempts a wrap around from the left side. He loses the puck which slides out towards the blue line. Kris Letang picks it up in the slot and jabs a quick slapper through traffic from the slot. DiPietro is able to eat it up.
14:52: Letang drops Moulson along the left wing boards just inside the Penguins' blue line.
14:10: Letestu spins and whips a wrister on net from the right circle. DiPietro stops it initially as Mike Rupp crashes in. The puck flutter up on him. DiPietro reaches back and attempts to knock it away as it lands on top of hte cage. Rupp actually holds his arms up in a pseudo-celebration.
12:06: Cooke is nabbed for interference against DiPietro. Dupuis, Crosby, Martin and Letang take the ice. It'll be interesting to see how the penalty kill functions without Adams taking draws.
11:27: Martinek cracks a slapper towards the cage from the right point. It misses on the near side and ricochets out to the left of the cage. Blake Comeau follows up on it but doesn't really make good contact with the bouncing puck. It flutters up in the air and Johnson snags it.
10:06: Cooke's penalty is killed with almost no threat from the Islanders.
8:46: Off a pretty bad turnover by the Islanders in their own zone, Malkin rockets a wrister on net from the slot. DiPietro is in perfect position and eats it up.
7:41: Tyler Kennedy draws a penalty as he's tripped up by Nino Niederreiter in the left circl in New York's zone. Letang, Malkin, Crosby, Chris Kunitz and Goligoski take the ice.
7:38: Off faceoff win, Letang whips a wrister from the right point on net. Kunitz is in front screening. Despite that, DiPietro is still able to fight it off.
5:41: Another weak effort on the power play comes to an end for the Penguins.
5:15: Niederreiter not be all that impressed with the Penguins' power play as he's nabbed for high sticking Tangradi. Tangradi's chin is cut a bit so that makes it a "four-minuter." Malkin, Crosby, Goligoski, Letang and Kunitz take the ice.
5:05: Goligoski snaps off a wrister from the right circle wide on the right side.
3:33: Andrew Hutchinson and Paul Martin misconnect on a pass along the New York blue line and the puck clears the zone. That prompts lots of hearty booing.
3:11: Comeau skates up the right wing with Moulson on a two-on-one against Martin. Comeau deals to Moulson on the left wing. Moulson puts it wide on the far side. Unreal.
2:54: As the video board prompts a "LET'S GO PENS!" chant, fans turn it into a "SHOOT THE PUCK!" chant.
2:45: Malkin blasts a slapper on net from the top of the slot. Despite Kunitz's butt in his face, DiPietro fights it off.
1:21: The Penguins ice the puck. More boos.
1:15: Niederreiter's penaties expire. The Penguins look totally lost with the man advantage.
0:00: End of period. Islanders 0, Penguins 0.
FIRST INTERMISSION
-Take back anything bad you ever said about the man pictured above. He has been vindicated in our eyes. It's pretty clear there's a pretty big malfunction among the players on the ice when it comes to the power play and we have to place most of the blame on Crosby and Malkin.
-There's no excuse for this power play to be this bad. You have two one-time scoring champions on the ice at the same time.
-Defensively, the Penguins are doing a lot better. The Islanders have not had much of an attack.
-That said, the Penguins have had six minutes of power play time and the Islanders are pretty beat up.
-The Penguins have a n 8-3 lead in shots.
-Malkin leads the game with three.
-Martinek leads the Islanders with two.
-Goligoski leads the games with 8:17 of ice time.
-Moulson leads the Islanders with 7:40.
-Fire Ray Shero.
-The Islanders have a 13-10 lead in faceoffs (57 percent).
-Konopka is 6 for 9 (67 percent).
-Letestu is 3 for 5 (60 percent).
-Milan Jurcina leads the game with two blocked shots.
SECOND PERIOD
17:57: After a pretty lifeless start to this period, Bailey records the first shot of the second as he moves up the left wing and snaps off a low wrister. Johnson boots it away.
17:35: Mark Eaton gets his first shot of the game s he puts a slapper on net from the left point. Johnson fights it off. Fire Ray Shero.
16:56: Attendance is announced as 18,195. It is a standing room only sell-out. It is the team's 170th consecutive sell-out.
16:23: Malkin is set up with a nice chance in the slot. Despite having DiPietro well out of position, he misses the net to the left.
15:53: It was kind of ugly and kind of lucky, but the Penguins will take it. A loose puck bounces towards the left point. Martin steps up and just hammers slapper towards the cage. DiPietro is out pretty far above his crease and knocks it down with his glove but gives up a bad rebound. It comes to the the left of the cage. Rupp picks it up and tucks a backhander around two skaters and a diving DiPietro to give the Penguins a lead. The goal is unassisted for now. The "Woo-Hoo!" song is played. Penguins 1-0.
15:11: xxx puts a wrister on net from the right wing. DiPietro boots it out for another iffy rebound. Talbot follows up on it and tries to jam a backhander by DiPietro who is stretched out on his right side. No dice.
13:59: The Penguins seem to have located some sort of flaw with DiPietro. They're trying to create rebounds off bad angle shots it seems. Comrie sneaks up the left wing and snaps off a low wrister. DiPietro kicks it out to the crease. Dupuis is there but can't really pull the trigger on a shot.
13:03: Letestu chases down a puck behind the New York net and tips it towards the right wing corner before Mottau can check him. Eric Tangradi picks it up, moves towards the right circle and chucks a wrister towards the crease. It hits off the skate of Jurcina and deflects by DiPietro's right leg. Ugly but it counts. It's about time the Penguins start collecting goals like this. Letestu and Deryk Engelland get assists. It's Tangradi's first career NHL goal. The "Woo-Hoo!" song is played. Penguins 2-0.
12:12: Comeau can't cleanly handle a pass as he enters the Penguins' zone. As he looks down and back for the puck, Letang steps up and blasts him with a shoulder on shoulder hit. Comeau loses his lid and falls to the ice in a daze. He's on his knees in obvious discomfort. Bailey drops his gloves and jumps Letang from behind. They fall to the ice before anything can come of it. Trainers rush out to attend to Comeau. Officials immediately give Letang the boot and send him to the showers. They totally botched that call up. Replays clearly show a shoulder on shoulder hit. Fans go nuts when the crystal clear gigantic video board shows the hit. A two syllable chant regading manure can be heard. Letang gets a major for an illegal check to the head and a game misconduct. Comrie will serve his major. Bailey gets two minutes for roughing. We'll have four-on-four for two minutes.
11:19: Martin sneaks up the left wing and attacks the net. Gilles appears to nearly tackle him and prevents a shot. No call.
10:30: Off a rush up ice, Hutchinson snaps off a wrister wide to the far side.
10:12: Bailey's penalty expires. The Islanders will have three minutes of power play time.
8:42: The Islanders cash in on the officials' gaffe. Weight snaps off a wrister from the left point> It hits the stick of Comeau, who is fine apparently, in the slot and deflects to the right of Johnson. Bailey fishes it away from Johnson and puts it into the net with a backhander. Fans go nuts again. Comeau and Weight get assists. Officials could claim one too. Amazing how their power play minus some of their best players made that look easy. They still have 1:30 of power play time. Penguins 2-1.
7:12: The Letang major is killed.
6:54: The Penguins get sloppy behind their own net and the Islanders make them pay. From behind the net, Comeau moves a pass to slot for Konopka. Konopka whiffs on the shot a bit. The puck deflects to Martinek in the left circle who grips and rips a wrister by Johnson on the glove side. The Penguins were way too loose in their own zone on that. Islanders 2, Penguins 2.
5:10: The Islanders are nabbed for too many men on the ice. Niederreiter will serve the minor. He's been in the box three time tonight. We really didn't want to have to spell that name more than once. Crosby, Malkin, Comrie, Martin and Kunitz take the ice.
5:00: Crosby cracks a one-timer from the right circle. DiPietro makes the save and hangs on a Kunitz fishes for a rebound.
4:22: If they don't score a goal here, they should disband the team. Comrie treis to control a puck behidn the net but Jurcina goes all lumberjack on him and hacks the stick out of his hands. That's two minutes for slashing. The Penguins will have 1:12 of a two-man advantage. A goal here is a must. Crosby, Malkin, Comrie, Kunitz and Goligoski take the ice.
3:48: Malkin cranks a one-timer from the right point. Eaton blocks it out of the offensive zone. Fire Ray Shero.
3:13: Crosby puts a pedestrian wrister on net. DiPietro eats it up.
3:10: The bench minor is killed. The Penguins still have 48 seconds of a one-man advantage.
2:22: Disband the Penguins. They fail to present any sort of challenge with that extended power play. Ugh.
0:49: Trent Hunter moves up the right wing and snaps off a wrister from the faceoff circle. Goligoski slides down and blocks it.
0:18: Goligoski winds up and chops a slapper from the left
0:00: End of period. A scrum develops in the Islanders' zone. As a few players get into it, Malkin and Eaton give each other pretend facewashes and start laughing. Good stuff. Islanders 2, Penguins 2.
SECOND INTERMISSION
-Someone call this man's agent:
-Seriously, his power play, which we all pulled our hair out over (and apparently his), looks like the 1970s Canadiens' power play in comparison to this quagmire we're watching tonight.
-Letang's penalty is still pretty stunning is you ask us. Officials seemed to react to the end result and not what actually happened. If that makes sense.
-DiPietro looks really shaky. The Penguins need to do a better job of pressuring him.
-Martin and Letestu got assists on Rupp's goal.
-Scoring change: Comeau and Moulson got assists on the second New York goal.
-The Penguins have a 19-12 lead in shots.
-Malkin, Crosby, Martin and Martinek each lead the game with three shots.
-Goligoski leads the game with 18:23 of ice time.
-Martinek leads the Islanders with 15:57.
-The Islanders have a 22-19 lead in faceoffs (54 percent).
-Weight is 4 for 6 (67 percent).
-Crosby is 8 for 15 (53 percent).
-Martinek leads the game with three blocked shots.
-No one on the Penguins has more than one.
THIRD PERIOD
19:15: Konopka is called for holding Kennedy. Insert the obligatory "Can the Penguins decline the penalty?" joke where ever you like. Crosby, Malkin, Comrie, Kunitz and Goligoski take the ice.
19:04: Crosby rockets a one-timer from the right circle wide on the near side.
17:15: Another weak effort on the power play comes to an end.
17:07: Konopka jabs a quick wrister on net from the left circle.
16:59: Talbot blasts a slapper on net from the right wing. DiPietro eats it up. Cooke shoves P.A. Parenteau into DiPietro. They both tumble to the ice. DiPietro, who is no stranger to injuries, is slow to get up. Cooke is sent off for goaltenders interference. Not a smart play. Talbot, Dupuis, Martin and Engelland take the ice.
14:52: Johnson fights off a slapper by Frans Nielsen.
14:40: Malkin gains the offensive zone with speed on the right wing and dishes to Andrew Hutchinson trailing on the right wing. As Hutchinson rips a wrister wide to the far side. Cooke runs into DiPietro and puts him on his back again. DiPietro lays on the ice like a rotting carcass. A train comes out to attend to him. Cooke is sent off once again for goaltenders interference. He needs to be smarter. Talbot, Dupuis, Goligoski and Engelland take the ice.
14:01: DiPietro plays a puck played down ice and gets the Hossa/Ovechkin booing treatment as fans suggest he embellished the hit.
13:10: Moulson takes a feed in the slot and taps a quick shot on net Johnson holds it out with his right leg and pokes away the rebound before Weight can pounce on it.
12:43: The Islanders are once again called for too many men on the ice. Four-on-four for three seconds.
12:40: Cooke's penalty is killed. The Penguins will have 1:57 of power play time.
11:25: Crosby snaps off a wrister from the left circle. DiPietro fights it off with his glove.
10:40: The Islanders' bench minor is killed. Another pointless power play.
9:35: A slapper by Lovejoy from the right point is deflected out of play.
8:58: Grabner floats a wrister on net from the left point. Johnson gloves it.
8:04: Andrew MacDonald whacks a loose puck on net from the slot. Johnson was caught a bit out of position but still managed to boot it out with his right leg.
6:02: Kennedy tries to jam in a shot from the right of the cage. DiPietro holds his ground.
5:22: Malkin takes a shift with Talbot and Cooke.
3:44: Letestu snaps off a wrister from the right circle. DiPietro steers it behind the net.
2:49: Niederreiter goes wide on Hutchinson on the left wing, gets a step on him and whips a low wrister on net. Johnson holds it out.
2:26: Kunitz intercepts a clearing attempt along the right wing wall in the Islanders' zone and snaps a backhanders towards the slot. Dupuis is there and re-directs it on net.
2:17: Engelland dumps Nielsen in the neutral zone. That's two minutes for interference. This is a tough spot for the Penguins. Dupuis, Goligosiki, Talbot and Lovejoy take the ice.
0:58: Cooke whacks a puck down ice away from Nielsen for a clear.
0:17: The Penguins dodge one and kill the Engelland minor.
0:02: Eaton whips an innocent wrister on net from the right point. Johnson gloves it with ease.
0:00: End of period. Islanders 2, Penguins 2.
THIRD INTERMISSION
-The Penguins have a 26-22 lead in shots.
OVERTIME
4:40: Nielsen chucks a backhander on net from teh slot. Johnson boots it out.
4:31: Jurcinia blasts a slapper from the right point. Johnson kicks it to the corner with his left leg.
4:10: Crosby and Malkin can't beat DiPietro down low.
4:08: Jurcina is called for hooking Crosby. Big chance here for the Penguins. Four one three. Dan Bylsma calls a time out to get organized.
3:09: Goligoski slides a pass from the left point to Malkin on the right point. Malkin blasts a one-timer. DiPietro boots it ou like a pinball bumper. Goligoski corrals the rebound in the left circle, fends off a defender and roofs a wrister by a diving DiPietro. Goligoski looks up to the heavens to celebrate. Noise burst out of the crowd like a balloon. The Penguins finally have a win in their new arena. Malkin and Crosby get assists. End of game. The "Woo-Hoo!" song is played. Penguins 3, Islanders 2.
POSTGAME
-The dam was going to break eventually. For both the Penguins' power play and their home losing streak. Granted, they broke each of those barriers with a pretty ugly effort, but they broke them regardless.
-Amazing how when you just put even a low percentage shot on net, it can create another scoring chance. That's what happened will all three of the Penguins goals. They put pedestrian shots towards the net, got some pedestrian rebounds and cashed them in. Why can't they do that more often?
-Yeah, the power play won the game, but that doesn't excuse the just dreadful effort it gave most of the night. We'd be lying if we knew the remedy for it, but something needs addressed.
-From what we've been told, the NHL has already begun reviewing Letang's major for his "head" shot and it's likely to be rescinded.
-If a player accumulates two majors, he gets an automatic suspension.
-Even Josh Bailey, the player who jumped Letang after his hit to Comeau, said he didn't think it was a head shot after watching it on replay.
-The Islanders did say Comeau was being evaluated by medical personnel after the game.
-Yeah, they got the assists on Goligoski's game-winner, but Crosby and Malkin still need to produce more.
-Where would this team be without Goligoski playing some of the best hockey of his life?
-Brent Johnson was once again solid. As he seemingly always does, he put his team in a position to win.
-Overall, this was a pretty sloppy game to watch. Just a ton of penalties.
-We love how Letestu got bumped down to the fourth line but still managed to find a way to record two assists.
-Engelland has stepped up in a big way with Orpik and Michalek. With those two out, Engelland assumes the role of their most physical defender and he has looked like a legit top six defenseman in the past three games.
-Radek Martinek played a heck of a game for New York. With Mark Streit, who usually eats up a ton of minutes, down, Martinek filled his void pretty well tonight.
-The Penguins ended up with a 29-24 lead in shots.
-Crosby and Nielsen each led with five.
-Goligoski led the game with 28:41 of ice time.
-Mottau led the Islanders with 24:25.
-The Islanders had a 33-30 edge in faceoffs (52 percent).
-Konpka was 14 for 23 (61 percent).
-Crosby was 15 for 25 (60 percent).
-Martin led the game with four blocked shots.
-Mottau and Martinek led the Islanders with three.

What's up with these guys. I love this team on paper going into the season. I know we have a ton of injuries but something's not clicking yet.
Would be nice to see Tangradi do a bit more to make his case for being in the bigs. He is invisible out there. As such a big body, how about finishing a check?

What's missing with these guys? A couple things strike me. Lots of blind passes that aren't working, Sid a big offenders. Spacing just seems off. Guys don't seem like they know where each other will be. Has to be a function of lots of new faces. Last is this PP which is just beyond description.

Nice to see Tangradi get his first goal. Hopefully there will be a lot more from him. Glad to see Rupp get one early in the year, too. Maybe he'll have a great year like last year.
