The Penguins, hockey and more, by the PG's Seth Rorabaugh. |
"Twenty Years Later" is a segment, with a highly unimaginative name, which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2010-11 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1990-91 season which led to the first Stanley Cup title in franchise history. We will look back on games on a particular date and catch up with former players, coaches, executives and media members who were a part or around that team.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 4-4 tie against the Sabres, Oct. 19, 1990.
Just over 11 minutes later at 14:17 of the first period, rookie right winger Jaromir Jagr tied the score, 1-1 by deking through a few defenders and jamming a backhander by goaltender Darren Puppa. Defenseman Zarley Zalapski recorded an assist.
The Sabres reclaimed the lead at 2:01 of the second period when center John Tucker banked a puck off the body of Young and into the cage. Right winger Dave Snuggerud recorded the only assist.
A little over three minutes later at 5:20, center John Cullen tied the game once again converting a set up by defenseman Paul Coffey.
At 6:54 of the period, Vaive gave Buffalo a 3-2 lead by beating Young on a power play. Centers Christian Ruutu and Dale Hawerchuk had assists.
Exactly seven minutes later, right winger Joe Mullen tied the game, 3-3, by converting his own power play goal. Cullen and left winger Kevin Stevens were credited with assists.
Late in the period at 18:37, Zalapski took a backhanded pass from Jagr and put a shot on net. Puppa made the inital save but couldn't stop Zalapski on the rebound. Jagr and left winger Phil Bourque had assists.
The Penguins seemed to have a win secured but at 13:10 of the third, right winger Mike Foligno beat Young from the edge of the crease. Hawerchuk had the only assist.
Notes:
-Young made 35 saves in his first game of the season.
-The three stars were: 1.) Jagr 2.) Vaive 3.) Foligno
-Stevens extended a scoring streak to seven games.
-Center Bryan Trottier left the game after straining a buttocks muscle injury.
Also in the news that day:
-Two home runs from third baseman Chris Sabo led the Cincinnati Reds to an 8-3 road win at Oakland Alameda County Coliseum in Game 3 of the World Series. The Reds had a 3-0 series lead.
