Penguins

-Is Consol Energy Center handicapped friendly (PG+)?

-Welcome back Zbynek Michalek (above)... to practice at least.

-According to Kris Letang, there ain't no party like a Maxime Talbot kind of party.

-The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins demoted forward Nick Petersen (right) to the Wheeling Nailers and released defenseman Drew Fata.

-After yesterday's moves, Jonathan Bomboulie of the Citizens Voice of Wilkes-Barre takes a look at the AHL Penguins' potential lines and defensive pairings.

-Happy 59th birthday to former Penguins forward Joe Noris. A third-round pick in 1971, Noris' Penguins career amounted to 35 games and seven points in 1971-72. Midway through 1972-73, he was traded to the Blues in exchange for Jim Shires. He is currently the owner/operator of Skate San Diego.

Atlantic Division

-With forwards Trent Hunter (foot) and Michael Grabner (undisclosed) dinged up, the Islanders recalled forward Matt Martin from Bridgeport of the AHL.

-The Rangers demoted forward Jeremy Williams to Hartford of the AHL.

Northeast Division

-An overtime goal and an assist by Andrei Kostitsyn led the Canadiens to a 3-2 win against the Coyotes. Teammate Michael Cammalleri (above, with teammates) also had a goal and an assist while Carey Price made 27 saves in the victory.

-Kostitsyn's goal:

-Midway through the game, Montreal defenseman P.K. Subban accused teammates Jeff Halpern (No. 15) and Tom Pyatt (No. 94) of stealing his poutine. Former Penguins defenseman Hal Gill wasn't buying it:

-We think.

-Canadiens defenseman Andrei Markov is expected to receive medical clearance to return to the lineup this weekend. He has not played since Game 1 of an Eastern Conference semifinal series against the Penguins last postseason due to a knee injury.

-Senators defenseman and former Penguin Sergei Gonchar is expected to play in his 1,000th career game tonight. Fire Ray Shero.

-Bruins legend and team executive Cam Neely is still not a fan of Ulf Samuelsson.

Southeast Division

-How good is Lightning forward Steven Stamkos (right) playing right now? Let's put it this way. The words "production" and "Mario Lemieux" are being used in the same sentence.

-Lightning forward and former Penguin Ryan Malone is off to a slow start.

-The Lightning could be missing five players by the time they face the Penguins Wednesday. Former Penguins forward Dominic Moore (groin), forward Simon Gagne (neck) defensemen Mattias Ohlund (knee), Matt Smaby (stomach virus) and Brett Clark (wrist) are all dinged up.

-The Thrashers activated goaltender Ondrej Pavelec (concussion) from injured reserve and demoted former Pittsburgh Forge goaltender Peter Mannino to Chicago of the AHL. Pavelec suffered a fainting spell in the season opener and struck his head on the ice.

-The Capitals recalled goaltender Braden Holtby from Hershey of the AHL and demoted former Penguins goaltender Dany Sabourin and forward Jay Beagle to Hershey.

-"I hate teams that make excuses about it. It's opportunities for guys that play five minutes to play 15 minutes, for guys that play 15 minutes to play 22 minutes. Quite frankly they all go home and [complain] that they don't play enough and now is the chance to show us what they've got." - Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau on his team's injuries.

-Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin (right) cares not for the thunder thighs of American women.

-The Hurricanes held a fan parade in downtown Raleigh yesterday and hoped to give away 200 sets of tickets. It was a nice gesture, but one problem. Only 100 people (approximately) showed up.

Central Division

-Former Penguin Mathieu Garon made 28 saves and led the Blue Jackets to a 2-1 win against the Flyers. Fire Ray Shero.

-Check out this pass by Columbus captain Rick Nash to set up Derick Bassard for a goal:

-Happy times for Columbus' Kyle Wilson. Not so much for Philadelphia's Chris Pronger:

-The Blue Jackets activated forward Jared Boll (back) from injured reserve.

-Nash was fined $2,500 by the NHL for striking Flames defenseman Mark Giordano with a high stick Friday.

-Blues defenseman Roman Polak (right) is expected to miss at least one game after he suffered a laceration on his right wrist in a collision with Sidney Crosby Saturday.

-The Predators demoted defenseman Teemu Laakso to Milwaukee of the AHL.

-Red Wings coach Mike Babcock likes the fact that defenseman Niklas Kronwall is "dangerous."

Northwest Division

-Canucks forward Rick Rypien (right) talked publicly for the first time about his six-game suspension resulting from making contact with a Wild fan last week. Said Rypien, "It's inexcusable what I did. The decision I made at that moment is something I'd like to take back. At the end of the day, I want to learn from it and never let it happen again."

-Flames forward Craig Conroy is expected to play in his 1,000th career game Thursday.

-Having missed all but one game over the past two seasons due to post-concussion syndrome, Wild forward Pierre-Marc Bouchard has begun taking contact in practice.

Pacific Division

-Shootout goals by Anze Kopitar, Jarret Stoll and Michal Handzus led the Kings to a 3-2 win at Minnesota. Kopitar had a goal and an assist in regulation while teammate Jack Johnson recorded two assists. Jonathan Quick made 20 saves in the victory.

-The story of this game was this hit by Kings captain Dustin Brown on Wild forward Antti Miettinen:

-As you can see, Brown was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct. After the game, Brown disputed he hit Miettinen in the head saying: "If I had hit him in the head, he would probably be on the ice for a lot longer than he was."

-Handzus being popular:

-The Kings placed defenseman Drew Doughty (head) on injured reserve and recalled former Penguins defensive prospect Jake Muzzin from Manchester of the AHL.

-Sharks forward Devin Setoguchi is no Edgar Snyder:

-To say the least, the fact that Stars goaltender Kari Lehtonen has played in every game this season is a significant surprise.

Smythe Division

-After being on the chopping block potentially, women's hockey was granted approval for the 2014 Olympics in Sochi.

Just a little fun fact from that Ovechkin article- In the article he refers to women as telochki, which they describe as somewhere between b***h and chick on the spectrum of inappropriate things to call women. I asked my born-in-the-Soviet-Union roommate what the word meant he told me that it means young cow. What a nice and obviously mature guy.

Too bad I didn't hear about the Hurricanes ticket giveaway, I would have attended in my Ron Francis Whalers jersey.
