The Penguins, hockey and more, by the PG's Seth Rorabaugh. |
"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2010-11 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1990-91 season which led to the first Stanley Cup title in franchise history. We will look back on games on a particular date and catch up with former players, coaches, executives and media members who were a part or around that team.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 3-1 win against the Rangers, Nov. 3, 1990.
At 11:45 of the second, right winger Mark Recchi increased the lead to 2-0 during a five-on-three power play. Near the right post, Recchi took a cross crease pass from right winger Joe Mullen and beat Richter through the five hole. Assists went to Mullen and center John Cullen.
Just under two minutes later at 13:44, Cullen made it 3-0 beat putting a backhander by Richter from the slot. Recchi and left winger Kevin Stevens recorded assists.
At 4:54 of the third period, the Rangers broke through for their only goal. Left winger John Ogrodnick beat goaltender Frank Pietrangelo from a sharp angle. Assists went to Mullen's brother, right winger Brian Mullen and center Kevin Miller.
Notes:
-Pietrangelo recorded the win by making 24 saves.
-The three stars were 1.) Pietrangelo 2.) Cullen 3.) Recchi.
-Describing his fluky, accidental goal, Gilhen, a fourth-line mucker and grinder by anyone's standards, said, "For me, that's a 10."
-The Penguins blanked the Rangers on six power play attempts.
-Head coach Bob Johnson recorded his 200th career win.
-Mullen and Cullen each extended scoring streaks to eight games.
Also in the news that day:
-Pitt was shut out by No. 8 Miami, 45-0, at the Orange Bowl in Miami. It was the first shutout of Pitt since 1985.
-Penn State beat West Virginia, 31-19, Montaineer Field in Morgantown, W.Va. Penn State was led by safety Darren Perry who returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown.
-Two days prior elections, incumbent Robert Casey carried a 40-point lead in polls on challenger Barbara Hafer in Pennsylvania's gubernatorial race.
