"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2010-11 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1990-91 season which led to the first Stanley Cup title in franchise history. We will look back on games on a particular date and catch up with former players, coaches, executives and media members who were a part or around that team.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 3-2 overtime win against the Capitals, Nov. 24, 1990.
The Penguins responded on their own power play exactly eight minutes later at 12:14 when right winger Tony Tanti beat goaltender Jim Hrvinak by re-directing a shot by defenseman Paul Coffey. Assists went to Coffey and right winger Mark Recchi.
At 2:23 of the third, Hatcher cashed in again with a slap shot off assists from right winger Peter Bondra and left winger Kelly Miller.
The Pengins tied the game 2-2 when Coffey scored on goaltender Mike Liut. Right winger Joe Mullen and defenseman Paul Stanton recorded assists.
Recchi won the game 1:11 into the overtime period. On a power play, he took a cross crease pass from left winger Kevin Stevens and flipped the puck behind Luit from right post. assists went to Stevens and center John Cullen.
Notes:
-Pietrangelo recorded the win by making 35 saves.
-The three stars were 1.) Pietrangelo 2.) Hatcher 3.) Coffey.
-The Capitals actually out-shot the Penguins, 37-22.
-Hrvinak left the game at 13:36 of the second due to a knee injury.

-Former Flyers and Rangers coach Fred Shero passed away following a battle with cancer. He was 65. Shero led the Flyers to the Stanley Cup in 1974 and 1975 and directed the Ranger to the Cup final in 1980. He had a career record 390-225-119. Shero's son, Ray Shero, was hired as the Penguins' general manager in 2006.
-Quarter Tony Sacca threw for 187 yards and rushed for 113 for Penn State in a 22-17 defeat of rival Pitt at Beaver Stadium in University Park, Pa. The win secured a bid to the Blockbuster Bowl for Penn State (9-2). It was head coach Joe Paterno's 229 career victory. Sacca, who threw one touchdown became the first quarterback to rush for 100 yards during Paterno's tenure with Penn State. Pitt (3-7-1) quarterback Alex Van Pelt threw for 246 yards but was also intercepted four times.
