-Happy 32nd birthday to former Penguins defenseman Rob Scuderi (right). A fifth-round draft pick in 1998, Scuderi spent parts of fives seasons with the Penguins. As a rookie in 2003-04, Scuderi saw action in 13 games and scored three points. Following the 2004-05 lockout, Scuderi broke through as an NHL regular in 2005-06 by appearing in 57 games and recording four assists. He followed that up in 2006-07 by playing in 78 games and scoring 11 points. That spring's playoffs saw him appearin in five games and fail to record a point. In 2007-08, Scuderi saw action in 71 games while recording fives assists. He helped the franchise return to its third Stanley Cup final appearance that spring by playing in 20 games and recording three assists. During 2008-09, Scuderi established career highs in games (81) and points (16). In the 2009 postseason, he stepped up in a defensive role while playing in 24 games and contributing five points. His biggest contribution during the postseason came in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup final when he came through with a series of blocked shots which preserved a 2-1 victory (below). The team would advance to Game 7 where it won the third Stanley Cup title in franchise history. During the 2009 offseason, Scuderi joined the Kings as a free agent. He remains with Los Angeles. In 300 regular season games with the Penguins, Scuderi scored 39 points. In 49 playoff games, he collected eight points.

Atlantic Division

-Brandon Dubinsky had a goal and an assist for the Rangers in a 3-1 win at New Jersey. Henrik Lundqvist made a whopping 43 saves in the victory. The Devils have lost six consecutive games.

-We know New York's Sean Avery is hardly a popular fellow, but New Jersey's Matthew Corrente went a little too far with the karate kicks if you ask us:

-Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur challenges New York's Marian Gaborik with a poke check:

-After former Penguins forward Erik Christensen suffered a right knee sprain, the Rangers recalled forward Dale Weise from Hartford of the AHL.

-The Rangers demoted forward Todd White to Connecticut.

-Flyers forward Jody Shelley was suspended two games for a sucker punch to Canucks defenseman Andrew Alberts Tuesday:

-The Flyers recalled forward Erik Gustafsson from Adirondack of the AHL.

Northeast Division

-The Maple Leafs demoted forward Nazem Kadri to their AHL affiliate, also in Toronto.

-The Senators recalled goaltender Mike Brodeur from Binghamton of the AHL.

Southeast Division

-Cam Ward made 37 saves for the Hurricanes in a 4-0 shutout of the Senators. Zach Boychuk had two goals for Carolina while teammate Patrick Dwyer added a goal and an assist.

-The Capitals demoted forwards Andrew Gordon and Keith Aucoin to Hershey of the AHL.

-The Panthers demoted former Penguins forward Bill Thomas (right) and defenseman Keaton Ellerby to Rochester of the AHL.

-Thrashers forward Evander Kane was diagnosed with a "mid-body" injury after being hit into the boards Tuesday by Arron Asham.

Central Division

-A hat trick and an assist by Patrick Eaves helped the Red Wings rout the Stars, 7-3. Jiri Hudler and captain Nicklas Lidstrom each had a goal and an assist for Detroit while teammates Todd Bertuzzi and Johan Franzen each recorded two assists. Jimmy Howard made 28 saves in the win. Jamie Benn had a goal and an assist for Dallas.

-A shoulder injury will sidelined Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews approximately two weeks.

-The Predators claimed forward Marek Svatos off waivers from the Blues. Svatos had signed the Blues after starting the season with Avangard Omsk of the KHL. But he had to clear waivers before he could join St. Louis.

-The Blue Jackets demoted forward Tom Sestito to Springfield of the AHL.

Northwest Division

-Two goals by Kyle Brodziak helped the Wild beat the Sharks, 5-3. Brent Burns added a goal and an assist for Minnesota while teammate Martin Havlat recorded two assists. Niklas Backstrom made 29 saves in the victory. Captain Joe Thornton had a goal and an assist for San Jose.

-We don't wan to accuse Backstrom of being scared of the puck, but...:

-Wild defenseman Marek Zidlicky left the game due to a shoulder injury.

-Canucks forward Sami Salo resumed practicing for the first time since suffering an Achilles injury in the summer.

Pacific Division

-Two goals and an assist by captain Shane Doan led the Coyotes to a 6-3 defeat of the Kings. Scottie Ushall added a goal and two assists for Phoenix while teammate Keith Yandle recorded three assists. Ilya Bryzgalov made 23 saves in the victory. Anze Kopitar recorded two assists for Los Angeles.

-Coyotes forward and former Penguin Paul Bissonnette had a solid bout with Los Angeles' Kevin Westgarth:

-The Stars signed defenseman Trevor Daley to a six-year contract extension worth $19.8 million. He will have a salary cap hit of $3.3 million on the deal kicks in next season.

-Just Saying: Kris Letang's salary cap hit is $3.5 million.

-The Coyotes demoted defenseman Nolan Yonkman to San Antonio of the AHL and recalled forward Brett MacLean from San Antonio.

-The Ducks signed forward Devante Smith-Pelly to a three-year contract.

-The Sharks recalled forward Brandon Mashinter and Tommy Wingels from Worcester of the AHL.

IIHF World Championships

-Kings prospect Brayden Schenn had four goals and an assist for Canada in a 10-1 rout of Norway. Penguins prospect Simon Despres had one assist, one hit and was a plus-2 for Canada.

-Panthers prospect Joonas Donskoi had a goal and an assist for Finland in an 8-1 defeat of Germany. Penguins prospect Tom Kuhnhackl had two shots and was a plus-1 for Germany.
