Uh... wow.
Penguins coach Dan Bylsma announced today that forward Evgeni Malkin suffered a torn ACL and MCL in his right knee during last night's game with the Sabres.
Malkin was injured early in the second period when Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers fell into his right knee.
In 43 games this season, Malkin has 37 points.

This is just awful news. We could tell the knee doesn't naturally bend the way his bent, but were hoping for better news. Puts a whole new spin on the season. Poor Geno.

Really sux. Hopefully, he'll be ready to go next season. Amazing, in one month, Crosby and Malkin suffer not just injuries, but potential career-changing injuries. Wishing Geno a quick recovery.

Terrible news. Can't say that I am surprised, the human body is not meant to bend in that way so something has to give. Very similar to what happened to Daunte Culpepper had in 2005, I think he tore the same two ligaments. So where do we go from here? I assume he gets put on some kind of injured reserve, does that mean his salary cap hit for this year goes away?

Terrible. You could just see it went all wrong on the play. Let's hope that he's fine long-term, knee injuries have ended many a promising career.

Probably going to be a long-term rehab post-surgery. He will recover, but it will not be quick. Optimistically I would say January of 2012, but it could potentially be fall. You just never know with knee injuries and blowing one ligament is bad enough, let alone two...

a season that had so much promise...with all due respect to the rest of the team, i can't see a deep run in the playoffs without our 2 headed monster...please get well soon geno... hope his mom is here to cook for him ...

Man that sucks. You could just tell when it happened, when that big oaf caming barreling down on his leg that this would not be good news. Thankfully this team is deep and the WB guys are showing what they can do. No one is gonna replace Geno, so we will simply need to keep playing a grind it out game to win.

Just had ACL surgery three weeks ago (tore the MCL and blew the ACL in October). I won't see a soccer pitch again until fall and I'm a decrepit 35 y.o. athlete. Geno's a big, strong guy with access to world class treatment. We could see him in the fall or at least by Christmas. Best of luck Geno!

*t's not the end of the world. While he is not replaceable, this team has been very good defensively. Malkin is a big part of that, but they are still very good on the blueline. And I agree with L_I_B, you can't allow him to try and come back this year. He is a long-term part of the franchise and needs to be 100% before he is allowed back on the ice.

The bad news is obvious. The consolation is the team has played well despite Malkin playing like a 3M a year player. Maybe Shero can get team to unload a free agent to be forward who is overpaid enough no other team is willing to give fair value for that player.
