"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2010-11 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1990-91 season which led to the first Stanley Cup title in franchise history. We will look back on games on a particular date and catch up with former players, coaches, executives and media members who were a part or around that team.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 3-2 win against the Kings, March 7, 1991.
At the 16:56 mark of the first period, left winger Bob Errey tied the game, 1-1 by scoring on goaltender Kelly Hrudey. Center Mario Lemieux and defenseman Peter Taglianetti recorded two assists.
Less than a minute later at 17:37, left winger Kevin Stevens scored his 30th goal of the season to give the Penguins a 2-1 lead. Lemieux and Errey netted assists.
Late in the period at the 18:42 mark, left winger Tony Granato tied the game, 2-2 on a power play. Right winger Tomas Sandstrom and Gretzky had assists.
After a scoreless second period, Stevens scored the game-winning goal at 3:16 of the third off assists from defenseman Paul Coffey and right winger Scott Young.
Notes:
-Barrasso made 34 saves to record the win.
-The three stars are 1.) Stevens 2.) Barrasso 3.) Lemieux.
-Stevens had his first two-goal game since Nov. 28.

-The Penn State men's basketball team, participating in its final Atlantic 10 season, won the conference's tournament with a 81-75 victory against George Washington at Rec Hall in University Park, Pa. Forward James Barnes had 22 points for Penn State.
