Some pretty good news on multiple fronts at Penguins' practice today.
First and foremost, Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, who has been sidelined since Jan. 5 due to a concussion, skated in full gear for approximately 15 minutes prior to the team's practice for the first time since leaving the lineup.
Crosby said: "I’ve had some good days here the last few. I was able to get on a bike and exercise a bit. Didn’t have any symptoms from that. Just was given the opportunity to skate. Did that today and we’ll see moving forward."
On how he felt after the skate this morning: "Feel alright. It’s kind of early. With these things, I tended to get symptoms later in the day so we’ll see how it goes."If he has a specific target date on coming back: "I have no clue. I’m not thinking too far ahead as far as time frame."
Also, forward Eric Tangradi (concussion) skated in full gear along with forward Mike Comrie (hip) and defenseman Brooks Orpik (finger). Tangradi has been out of the lineup since being injured by Islanders forward Trevor Gillies Feb. 11.
Finally, forward Arron Asham (concussion) skated in a full practice. He has been sidelined since Feb. 1.
Update: Asham said after practice he hopes to return to the lineup Sunday against the Rangers.
Update Two: Matt Niskanen (flu) did not practice today and is not expected to play tomorrow against the Senators. The team will recall a defenseman from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL later today. Nick Johnson (concussion) is expected to travel with the team tonight and practice in Ottawa tomorrow.

Having read about Tangradi earlier today, and now Sid, these news just made my day. Get fully well soon, both of you!

How appropriate that a guy named "Sidney Patrick Crosby" returns to the ice during the week of St. Patrick's Day! Let's hope Sid stays healthy, returns soon to playing, and the Pens keep the luck going with a long winning streak into June!

Please, please don't come back until you're ready Sid! I'm cautiously optimistic, I had kinda come to terms with the fact that we wouldn't see him on the ice until October. I think Crosby to Neal could do some damage in the playoffs...

Is it weird that I feel this giddy about the whole thing?
This is no guarantee of anything, but with how conservative they've been (and rightfully so) I think the fact that he was in gear and everything is really good news!
Ohhhh man, Sid back for the playoffs is a VERY exciting prospect!

Certainly provides a lot more hope for the postseason. Anything can happen in the playoffs, but I don't see this team winning more than one round without Crosby. If he can return and be productive this team could do some damage.
Comrie and Tangradi are likely headed to the press box, but at least it looks like they could be available if/when somebody goes down.

If the Penguins were comfortable with releasing video, having him available for media, and all that, it says to me that they're confident he will return by mid-April.
That's me being optimistic because of how much he means to a run, but it's good to hear this.

My husband made a good point which is that if he skated with the media there today, he's probably been skating in private for a while now. I think this is very, very good news even if he's not available for the playoffs. I was starting to get worried about his long-term future.

I'll probably get a lot of haters on this, but I'm kind of hoping Sid just takes it easy and doesn't come back this year. How many cheap shots to the head would he take in this year's playoffs without care for suspensions etc.? I mean ,due to the weight of playoff games, if someone beheads him they might get 4 games, and Kubina got 3 games recently for something that might ice Sid for good if he comes back even a smidge too soon. Nevermind that we play the Islanders for the second-last game of the season.
I want the real Sid back, 100% healthy, even knowing that the 90% Sid is still probably vying to be the best player in the league. I'd rather watch him for another 15 seasons, and see how we do without him this year, than to chance anything and possibly never see him at 100% again.

Given the apparent seriousness of his injury, and given the amount of work he does along the boards and around the net, I'd almost rather see him sit out the rest of the year and hope the GMs see the light and change some rules re head shots.
I know, I'm being a wimp, and there are many good reasons against my opinion, but hey, guys like Sid come along once in a generation, and if there's a likelihood of increasing his safety at the expense of one year's playoffs, I'd take it.

Crosby is a smart guy, I don't think he will put his career in jeopardy by returning until he is ready. I like Malkin as much as the next guy, but Crosby will be the face of the Pittsburgh Penguins as long as he plays for them and I don't see team officials, coaches, or doctors allowing him to take the ice until he is completely symptom-free.
I'm right there with you guys though, it will be extremely stressful watching him lead a rush through the neutral zone and seeing a d-man line him up.

I am sure that the Pens and Sid have both learned a valuable lesson; and are taking things at this pace because they understand that Sid is so very important to the league and not just the Pens.

If Sid is in the lineup for the Isles game, then Godard better be one of his wingers and Engelland better be one of his defensemen. No more watching Talbot and Adams get slapped around the ice when some shady s**t goes down.

Sid has gone his entire life (including NHL career) without taking hits like the ones he took at the beginning of January. I'm confident in his ridiculous hockey ability to avoid contact and play at a high level.
Hard to gauge what other players will do.

The best plan for the next Islanders visit would be to bring up the entire WBS squad to see if they could defeat them, then tell the press regulars are resting for the playoffs.

Curious if Asham comes back to where would he play? Who would he bump? Right now they have 22 guys on the roster. I think the team is better without him...

capsfnva, even with ovechclown the craps arent going anywhere, so what's your point? how many times have the crapitals beat the Penguins in the playoffs again? oh yeah, 1 out of 8. when that stat changes maybe you will have something to talk about, til then go back to your hole.
