"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2010-11 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1990-91 season which led to the first Stanley Cup title in franchise history. We will look back on games on a particular date and catch up with former players, coaches, executives and media members who were a part or around that team.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 6-3 win against the Nordiques, March 16, 1991.
The Penguins increased the lead to 2-0 when Trottier scored at the 6:51 mark Assists went to rookie right winger Jaromir Jagr and goaltender Tom Barrasso.
Just 1:28 into the second period, the Nordiques got on the board and made it 2-1 when left winger Scott Pearson beat Barrasso on a penalty shot.
At the 5:46 mark, right winger Mark Recchi cashed in on a power play off assists from left winger Kevin Stevens and defenseman Larry Murphy.
Just under two minutes later at 7:26, Pearson scored again to make it 3-2. Center Joe Sakic and rookie right winger Owen Nolan were credited with assists.
Recchi scored the eventual game-winning goal at the 15:31 mark on another power play off assists from Stevens and Murphy.
Jagr scored 7:31 into the third period. Defensemen Paul Stanton and Ulf Samuelsson netted the assists.
Rookie center Mats Sundin scored the Noridques' third goal just over half a minute later at 8:04. Center Stephane Morin recorded the lone assist.
The game's final goal was scored by Trottier on a power play at the 17:59 mark. Right winger Scott Young and Samuelsson netted assists.
Notes:
-Barrasso made 20 saves to record the win.
-The three stars were 1.) Recchi 2.) Jagr 3.) Trottier.
-The Penguins extended a home unbeaten streak to 13 games.
