"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2010-11 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1990-91 season which led to the first Stanley Cup title in franchise history. We will look back on games on a particular date and catch up with former players, coaches, executives and media members who were a part or around that team.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 4-2 win against the Rangers, March 17, 1991.
A power-play goal by left winger Kevin Stevens against goaltender Mike Richter at the 6:43 mark of the first period tied the game, 1-1. Assists went to defenseman Paul Coffey and right winger Mark Recchi.
Late in the period at the 18:02 mark, center Mario Lemieux scored to make it 2-1. Recchi and left winger Bob Errey were credited with assists.
New York tied it 5:40 into the second when right winger Mike Gartner scored on a power play. Defenseman Brian Leetch recorded the lone assists.
Just under 10 minutes later at 15:20, Stevens scored the eventual game-winning goal on another power play off assists from Coffey and Recchi.
Late in the period at 19:57, Lemieux added an insurance goal on the power play to make it 4-2. Stevens and Recchi had assists.
Notes:
-Barrasso made 24 saves to record the win.
-The Rangers extended a losing streak to six games.
-Recchi recorded his 67th assist of the season and broke Rob Brown's single-season franchise record for assists by a right wing.
-The win moved the Penguins past the Rangers for first place in the division.

-In a second-round NCAA tournament game at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y., Eastern Michigan beat Penn State, 71-68, in overtime. Freddie Barnes, James Barnes, Monroe Brown and DeRon Hayes each scored 12 points for Penn State.
