"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2010-11 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1990-91 season which led to the first Stanley Cup title in franchise history. We will look back on games on a particular date and catch up with former players, coaches, executives and media members who were a part or around that team.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 4-4 tie against the Flyers, March 30, 1991.
The Penguins tied the game, 1-1, when defenseman Paul Coffey scored on goaltender Ken Wregget. Center Ken Priestlay and right winger Jay Caufield were credited with assists.
At 1:19 of the third period, rookie right winger Jaromir Jagr's power play goal put the Penguins up, 2-1. Center Ron Francis and Coffey recorded assists.
Just under threee minutes later at 4:16, left winger Bob Errey scored his 20th goal of the season to give the Penguins a 3-1 lead. Center Mario Lemieux had the lone assist.
At the 8:00 mark, Eklund scored off assists from center Kimbi Daniels and Kerr to make it, 3-2.
Kerr tied the game, 3-3, at 15:49. Center Keith Acton had the only assist.
Less than half a minute later at 16:17, left winger Troy Loney put the Penguins up 4-3 off assists from Jagr and center Bryan Trottier.
The game's final goal was scored by defenseman Kjell Samuelsson at 17:47. Assists went to left winger Murray Craven and center Ron Sutter.
Notes:
-Barrasso recorded a tie after making 28 saves.
-The three stars are 1.) Coffey 2.) Kerr 3.) Jagr.
-Right winger Mark Recchi, the team's leading scorer with 114 points, left the game in the second period with a right knee injury.
-Caufield's assist was his second point of the season.
