Penguins

-The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins are kind of good.

-Today would have been the 52nd birthday of former Penguins defenseman Arto Javanainen. A second-round pick of the club in 1984, Javanainen was the first European draft pick in franchise history. A native of Finland, his NHL career amounted to 14 games with the Penguins and five points in 1984-85. After spending most of that season with the Penguins' AHL affiliate in Baltimore, Javanainen returned to his native Finland. He passed away Jan. 25.

Atlantic Division

-With his team having lost 13 out of its past 19 games, Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren held a closed-door meeting with his squad prior to practice yesterday.

Northeast Division

-Filip Kuba's overtime goal gave the Senators a 3-2 win against the rival Canadiens. Bobby Butler added a goal and two assists for Ottawa while teammate Jason Spezza added a goal and an assist. Craig Anderson made 27 saves in the victory. James Wisniewski recorded two assists for Montreal.

-The Senators recalled defensemen Andre Benoit, David Hale, Derek Smith, forwards Erik Condra and Colin Greening from Binghamton of the AHL.

-The Bruins signed undrafted free agent forward Carter Camper to an entry-level contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Southeast Division

-Ondrej Pavelec made 29 saves for the Thrashers in a 3-0 shutout of the Rangers. Rob Schremp had a goal and an assist for Atlanta. With one game left, the Rangers are in eighth place in the Eastern Conference with 91 points, two more than the ninth-place Hurricanes who have two games remaining.

-“I’m so happy. All my life I just want to be here. I can’t explain how happy I am.” - Thrashers rookie defenseman Andrey Zubarev on recording his first career NHL point with an assist.

-Lightning forwards Nate Thompson, Vincent Lecavalier, Martin St. Louis, Teddy Purcell, Ryan Malone, defenseman Victor Hedman and goaltender Mike Smith each had their heads shaved for a charity which benefits pediatric cancer research.

-Capitals forward Mike Knuble has scored nine goals in his past 12 games.

-The Panthers signed undrafted free agent forward forward Anthony Luciani to an entry-level contract. Terms were not revealed.

Central Division

-Red Wings forward Henrik Zetterberg (right) will miss the final two games of the regular season due to a left knee injury.

-The Blue Jackets demoted forward Tomas Kubalik and goaltender David LeNeveu to Springfield of the AHL.

-Blue Jackets captain Rick Nash will miss the final two games of the regular season due to a back injury.

Northwest Division

-Roberto Luongo made 29 saves for the Canucks in a 5-0 shutout of the Wild. Ryan Kesler had a hat trick for Vancouver while teammate Mason Raymond added two goals.

-Prior to the game, the Canucks handed out their individual team awards (along with some former players wearing some of the team's uglier old uniforms). Additionally, the team was formally awarded the Presidents' Trophy. Injured forward Manny Malhotra was on hand to accept:

-Someone threw a fish onto the ice in the second period:

-Minnesota's Carson McMillan didn't appear to appreciate the placement of Canucks defenseman Keith Ballard's elbow here:

-Prior to the game, the Canucks unveiled a statue of former coach Roger Nielsen. The statue is posed raising a white towel on a stick just like Nielsen did during the 1982 postseason to protest a call:

-Kesler hit the 40-goal mark.

-Canucks forward Raffi Torres was suspended four games for a hit to the head of Oilers forward Jordan Eberle Tuesday. Torres will sit the final two games of the regular season (including last night's contest) and the first two games of the postseason.

-With defenseman Alexander Edler returning to the lineup after missing 31 games due to a back injury, the Canucks demoted defensemen Yann Sauve and Chris Tanev to Manitoba of the AHL.

-Avalanche captain Adam Foote (right) will announce his retirement today. He is the last active player in the NHL who played for the Quebec Nordiques before the franchise moved to Denver.

-With Cal Clutterbuck dealing with an illness, the Wild recalled forwards Carson McMillan and Jed Ortmeyer from Houston of the AHL.

-The Flames demoted forwards forwards Lance Bouma and Greg Nemisz to Abbotsford of the AHL.

Pacific Division

-A goal and an assist each by Loui Eriksson and Brad Richards led the Stars to a 4-2 win against the Avalanche. Jamie Benn recorded two assists for Dallas while Kari Lehtonen made 21 saves in the victory. Matt Duchene netted two assists for Colorado.

-Stars forward Adam Burish returned to the lineup after missing 11 games due to "lower-body" injury.

-Ducks goaltender Ray Emery is dealing with a "lower-body" injury. He missed most of the past two seasons due to a hip injury which required surgery.

Adams Division

-EJ McGuire, the vice president of the NHL's central scouting bureau, passed away following a battle with cancer. He was 58.

-Speak of former WHA franchises, Maple Leafs goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere and Flyers defenseman Chris Prongers are the only active players in the NHL who played for the Hartford Whalers.

-Former Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins forward Kurtis McLean has joined Langnau of the NLA in Switzerland.

NCAA Men's Tournament - Frozen Four

-A goal and an assist by J.T. Brown led Minnesota-Duluth to a 4-3 win against Notre Dame.

-Shawn Hunwick made 40 saves for Michigan in a 2-0 shutout of North Dakota.

-The championship game is scheduled for 7 p.m. EDT, Saturday.

The Pens need to find a way to sign UMD's power play for the playoffs. It was sick last night, going 3 for 4 in the first.

Seth, did Ben Holmstrom get suspended for his hit from Tuesday? I can't find anything about it online...

if Torres (a first-time offender) got 4 games for an arguably less severe hit (due to Eberle putting himself in a vulnerable position) on the same evening, Holmstrom probably deserves similar, but since Bertuzzi (and others) got no suspension, I won't be surprised if Holmstrom gets off with nothing...
