"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2010-11 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1990-91 season which led to the first Stanley Cup title in franchise history. We will look back on games on a particular date and catch up with former players, coaches, executives and media members who were a part or around that team.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 4-2 loss against the Devils in Game 5 of a Patrick Division semfinal series April 11, 1991.
Just under 10 minutes later at 13:15, Driver scored another power-play goal to put the Devils up 2-0. Assists went to left winger Brendan Shanahan and center Peter Stastny.
After a scoreless second period, center Ron Francis scored the Penguins' first goal just 54 seconds into the third against goaltender Chris Terreri. Right winger Mark Recchi netted the lone assist.
At the 3:41 mark, defenseman Larry Murphy tied the game, 2-2, off an assist by Francis.
Right winger Claude Lemieux scored the eventual game-winning goal at the 12:59 mark on a power play. Assists went to left winger Kirk Muller and Stastny.
