-Oddly enough, the Red Wings eliminated the Winnipeg Jets from the 1996 postseason prior to their move to Phoenix.

-Happy 55th birthday to former all-star Penguins defenseman and captain Randy Carlyle (right). Acquired in the 1978 offseason along with George Ferguson in a deal which sent Dave Burrows to the Maple Leafs, Carlyle spent parts of six seasons in Pittsburgh. In 1978-79, his first season with the Penguins, he appeared in 70 games and recorded 47 points. In seven postseason games that spring, he failed to record a point. He followed it up in 1979-80 by playing in 67 games and netting 36 points. He appeared in five postseason games that season and scored one goal. His best season was 1980-81. He saw action in 76 games, scored 83 points and was selected to his first all-star game. He also won the Norris Trophy, the only one in franchise history. During five postseason games that spring, he scored nine points. During 1981-82, Carlyle played in 73 games and scored 75 points and was selected to a second all-star game. In five playoff games that season, he scored four points. In 1982-83, Carlyle played in 61 games and contributed 56 points. After 50 games and 26 assists in 1983-84, he was traded to the Jets in exchange for a draft pick and future considerations. During a 6-5 road win against the Devils, Dec. 23, 1983, Carlyle scored the first regular season overtime goal in franchise history. In 397 regular season games with the Penguins, Carlyle recorded 323 points, 20th most in franchise history. In 22 postseason games, he scored 44 points. He is currently the head coach of the Anaheim Ducks.
-The Devils signed goaltender Keith Kinkaid to an entry-level contract. Terms of the contract were not released.
-The Oilers signed forward Curtis Hamilton, a second-round pick in 2010, to a three-year entry-level contract. He was assigned to Oklahoma City of the AHL.
-The Flames fired assistant coaches Rob Cookson and Jamie McLennan.
-The Kings signed signed forwards Tyler Toffoli and Jordan Weal, second- and third-round picks in 2010 respectively, to three-year entry level contracts.
