"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2010-11 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1990-91 season which led to the first Stanley Cup title in franchise history. We will look back on games on a particular date and catch up with former players, coaches, executives and media members who were a part or around that team.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 7-6 win against the Capitals in Game 2 of the Patrick Division final, April 19, 1991.
Just over a minute later at 13:59, left winger Phil Bourque tied the game, 1-1, with a goal against goaltender Don Beaupre. Right winger Mark Recchi and center Mario Lemieux had assists.
Late in the period, at 18:11, right winger Joe Mullen gave the Penguins a 2-1 lead with a goal off assists from left winger Kevin Stevens and defenseman Larry Murphy.
Just 35 seconds into the second period, Recchi scored on a power play to make it 3-1. Assists wents went to defenseman Paul Coffey and Lemieux.
At the 3:46 mark, right winger John Druce scored a power play goal to make the score, 3-2. Center Michal Pivonka and Hunter netted assists.
Another power-play goal by Recchi at 5:51 made it 4-2. Coffey and Lemieux had assists again.
At 11:35, center Mike Ridley scored on yet another power play to make it 4-3. Defenseman Calle Johansson recorded the only assist.
Stevens scored at 13:35 to put the Penguins up, 5-3. Coffey and rookie defenseman Paul Stanton had assists.
Just 2:17 into the third period, Ciccarelli struck on a power play to make it 5-4. Assists went to defenseman Kevin Hatcher and Johansson.
Ciccarelli scored his second goal at 8:05 to tie the game, 5-5. Johansson and left winger Dmitri Khristich netted assists.
Washington took its seocnd lead of the game at the 10:26 mark with a goal by Johansson. Hunter and Stephen Leach were credited with assists.
The Penguins tied the game, 6-6, at 15:25 on a goal by center Randy Gilhen against goaltender Mike Liut. Assists went to Recchi and Cullen.
A goal by Stevens at the 8:10 mark of overtime won the game. Francis and Mullen recorded assists.
Notes:
-Pietrangelo made 36 saves to record the win.
-The three stars were 1.) Stevens 2.) Recchi 3.) Ciccarelli.
-Liut replaced Beaupre at the start of the third period.
-Penguins defenseman Ulf Samuelsson left the game after the second period after re-injuring his broken right hand.

-An overtime goal by right winger Stephane Richer gave the Canadiens a 4-3 win against the Bruins in Game 2 of the Adams Division final at the Boston Garden. The series was tied, 1-1.
-A two-out single to centerfield by third baseman Jeff King scored first baseman Gary Redus in the ninth inning and gave the Pirates a 5-4 win against the Cubs at Three Rivers Stadium.
-Evander Holyfield, 29, retained the world heavyweight championship title with a 13-round decision against 43-year-old George Foreman.
