PREGAME
-Greetings from:

-It's a warm, somewhat muggy day in Pittsburgh. It's been raining on and off for about 24 hours. And thunderstorms are still a threat throughout most of the day. Some sights from "dahntahn." Fifth Avenue Place:

-A little known sub-clause in the Pittsburgh Agreement also included a steady supply of Czech hockey players to the region:

-This was a startling sight to say the least:

-Looking south on Grant Street:

-The old barn:

-The current barn:

-We're guessing the turnout for the big screen is lean on account of the potential thunderstorms:

-The weather didn't prevent these guys from bringing a couch we suspect may have been purchased from a thift store:

-It's windy out:

-A rare Sidney Crosby Team Canada and Vincent Lecavalier Lightning duo:

-Warm ups:

-The Penguins' starters are Arron Asham, Pascal Dupuis, Maxime Talbot, Kris Letang, Brooks Orpik and Marc-Andre Fleury.
-Their scratches are Mike Comrie, Matt Cooke, Deryk Engelland, Eric Godard, Dustin Jeffrey and Eric Tangradi.
-The Lightning's starters are Sean Bergenheim, Dominic Moore, Martin. St. Louis, Brett Clark, Victor Hedman and Dwayne Roloson.
-It's scratches are Randy Jones, Matt Smaby and Dana Tyrell.
-Sgt. Bob Timney of the U.S. Army Reserves brings the house down with the national anthem:

19:17: Hedman lugs the puck up ice from around his net to boos. Are fans just now starting to give him the "Jagr/Hossa/Ovechkin/etc." treatment for his hit on Sidney Crosby in January?
18:37: Tyler Kennedy snaps off a wrister from above the right circle. Brewer blocks it partially and it deflects into the left wing corner. It takes a fortunate hop to the left circle. Chris Kunitz is all over it and blast a one-timer from the faceoff dot on net. It squeaks under Roloson's glove hand and trickles dangerously in the crease. Simon Gagne is "Johnny-on-the-Spot" and clears it away. Roloson is a little shaky early on.
17:31: Hedman and Mark Letestu chase after a loose puck on the right wing wall in the Tampa Bay zone. Hedman (6-foot-6, 229 pounds is able to get to is first and plyas it up the wall but is dropped by Letestu (5-foot-11, 195 pounds) for his troubles. Nice hit by a much smaller man.
16:50: Fleury gets his first test as Stamkos and Nate Thomspon try to jam on in from the left side of the cage. Fleury falls on his rear end but is able to hold it out with his blocker.
15:48: Teddy Purcell uncorks a tricky wrister from the right circle. Fleury kicks it out with a "thud."
14:55: Kennedy and Eric Brewer races for a dump in into the right wing corner of the Tampa Bay zone. Kennedy smacks him into the boards. The Penguins have been very physical so far.
13:13: The Penguins get the first power play of the game as Pavel Kubina is sent off for interference against Asham in front of the benches. That's interference by the book, but it was a very strict interpretation of the rule. Kris Letang, Michalek, Jordan Staal, James Neal and Alex Kovale take the ice. take the ice.
12:57: Letang taps a pass to Michalek at the left half wall. Michalek unleashes a one-timer which Roloson fights off. The rebound is kicked to the right of the cage. Staal is right there and sweeps it back at the net with a wrister but is off the mark.
12:52: Neal collects the puck behind the net and attacks the cage from the left side but can't get a clean shot off.
12:37: Kovalev cranks a slapper from above the right circle. It hits something on the way in and skids juuuuuust wide to the left of the net.
11:13: The Kubina minor is killed. The Penguins attacked the net and created a few things.
10:31: Conner moves into the right circle and releases a wrister to the far side. Roloson kicks it out.
9:37: Malone controls a puck behind the net and kinds of backs his way into the crease against Orpik while attempting to jam it under Fleury. Fleury gets into a "frog" position and holds the puck out.
7:19: Conner tries to sneak up the left wing wall but is smeared against the wall by Marc-Andre Bergeron who is making his playoff debut for the Lightning.
6:55: A pass from the right wing corner miss-connects end end up sliding right to Orpik. Orpik corrals the puck and booms a slapper to the far side. It clinks off the far post and kicks out. Half of the fans from sections 104 to 110 stand in premature celebration.
5:55: A brief, faint "Rooolllll.....Sooooonnnn...." sing-song chant can be heard.
3:51: Bergeron makes a poor backhanded pass from the right circle of his own zone to the neutral zone. Kennedy is right there to pick it off. He races back into the offensive zone and
3:26: Kunitz pokes a loose puck in the slot to the right circle. Kennedy stretches out to corral it and and whips a quick wrister on net from a tough angle. Roloson eats it up.
3:03: Despite being dominated in the period, the Lightning take the first lead. Off a some fancy give and go passing, Teddy Purcell cranks a one-timer from the right circle. It beats Fleury on the near side and goes just inside the far post. It deflects out quickly. Simon Gagne is there to punch it in just to be sure. A quick review confirms the goal. Gagne gets credit for it. Purcell and Lecavalier each get assists. The Lightning just pulled that out of no where. Lightning 1-0.
2:52: Mike Lundin collects a dump in behind his own net and is blasted to the ice by Rupp a shoulder check. Rupp left his feet a little bit to deliver that hit.
2:17: Welcome to the postseason Steven Stamkos. Steve Downie collects a loose puck at the left point and whips a wrister on net. Stamkos is in front fighting off Paul Martin while attempting a re-direct but he ends up knocking it dead. As Fleury tries to poke check it away from a seated position, Stamkos is able to chop it over the blocker-side shoulder of Fleury and itno the cage. Stamkos earned that goal. Downie and former Penguin Adam Hall get assists. Fire Ray Shero. Lightning 2-0.
0:55: On a delayed penalty, Kennedy races up the right wing and puts a wrister on net. Roloson kicks it out.
0:41: Orpik deals a pass to Kovlaev in the left circle. Kovalev re-directs it on net. Roloson juuuust gets a piece of the shot with his right leg. The puck deflects behind him an flies through the crease to the opposite corner.
0:32: Lecavalier is called for roughing against Orpik behind the Penguins' net. The Pengins need this badly. Letestu, Kovalev, Neal, Letang and Michalek take the ice.
0:00: End of period. Lightning 2, Penguins 0.
FIRST INTERMISSION

-The Penguins dominated that period for about 17 minutes. The next two were kind of a train wreck. The final minute went in their favor.
-It's crazy to think of how different this period could have gone if the Penguins got a few bounces. Like the iffy rebound Roloson allowed early one off a shot by Kunitz. Or the rocket Orpik put off the far post.
-The Penguins have been very physical, especially on the forecheck. The Lightning's blue line will be using a few ice packs after the game.
-It's hard to blame Fleury for eeither of the goals he allowed. Purcell put a perfect shot on net for his goal. And Martin failed to take care of Stamkos for his.
-Tyler Kennedy has been the Penguins' best offensive threat thus far. He's created the most offensive chances.
-The Penguins have a 13-8 lead in shots.
-Kennedy leads the game with four.
-Stamkos leads the Lightning with two.
-Michalek leads the game with 8:17 of ice time.
-Hedman leads the Lightning with 8:11.
-The Lightning has a 10-8 edge in faceoffs (56 percent).
-Lecavalier is 3 for 3 (100 percent).
-Letestu is 3 for 5 (60 percent).
-Hedman leads the game with two blocked shots.
-EN reader Michael Ryan Janicki spotted... this:

SECOND PERIOD
20:00: The Penguins will have 1:28 of power-play time on fresh ice. Staal, Kovalev, Neal, Michalek and Letang take the ice.
18:49: Kovalev swing in off the left wing and attempts to attack the cage but Hedman is able to flop to his belly and poke the puck away with his stick. What a play.
18:05: Start printing up those Game 6 tickets. Martin and Stamkos go after a dump-in into the right wing corner of the Penguins' zone. Martin is thumped off the puck by Stamkos. Stamkos almost immediately snaps off a pass to just above the crease. Lecavalier coasts in untouched and punches it by the right leg of helpless Fleury. Kennedy was late on his back check and left Lecavalier all alone. Martin was abused by Stamkos for the second consecutive goal. This place is silent. Stamkos and St. Louis get assists. Lightning 3-0.
16:45: Another much needed power-play chance for the Penguins. The Lightning is nabbed for too many men on the ice. Downie will serve the minor. Kennedy, Michalek, Letang, Letestu and Kunitz take the ice.
14:52: Bergenheim caosts up the right wing and zip a pass to the slot but miss-connects and the puck sails through to the opposite corner.
14:45: The Lightning minor is killed. That was a waste of two minutes.
14:29: Wow. Just wow. Lundin booms a slapper from the left point. Fleury makes the inital save but allows a rebound. Gagne cuts through the slot, drags the puck towards him and snaps it by the glove hand of Fleury. A bad goal for him to allow. This is a rout. Moore and Lundin get assists. The Penguins pull Fleury mercifully and replace him with Brent Johnson. Lightning 4-0.
13:08: The Penguins dig their hole a little deeper as Rupp slams Malone into the boards from behind on the left wing wall in the Lightning zone. That's two minutes for boarding. Pretty stupid penalty. He hit Malone right in the No. 6 on his back. Michalek, Orpik, Staal and Maxime Talbot take the ice.
13:00: And the Lightning don't waste any time. Imagine that. A power play which doesn't mes around. Brewer whips a wrister on net from the left half wall. Johnson makes the initial save. The rebound is sitting pretty int he slot. Staal attempts a poke check but Stamkos beats him to it and chops it by Johnson. This is staggering. Brewer and St. Louis get assists. Lightning 5-0.
11:23: Attendance is announced as 18,535. It's the latest record for a hockey game at Consol Energy Center and it's the team's 209th consecutive sellout.
10:40: On a delayed penalty, Michalek fires a slapper from above the right circle. Roloson kicks it out. Play is halted. Lecavalier is called for hooking Letestu. Letang, Michalek, Kovalev, Staal and Neal take the ice. They've been playing the theme to "Jaws" for every Penguins' power play. They should be playing this theme:
10:21: And the Penguins don't waste any time wasting their power play. Letang is called for cross checking Hall in the right circle of the Penguins' zone. Four on four for 1:41.
8:35: Just as Lecavalier's penalty expires. Pascal Dupuis snaps off a writer from teh top of the slot. it hits a stick and hops up on net. Roloson golves it. The Penguins still have 14 seconds of Letang's penalty to kill.
8:21: Letang's minor is killed.
6:10: Hall rushes up the right wing boards a dumps a puck into the right wing corner of the Penguins' zone. Orpik smacks him against the boards for his troubles.
5:04: Staal steals a puck in the neutral zone, pushes it into the offensive zone and taps a pass to Kennedy on the right wing. Kennedy winds up and puts a slapper on net. Roloson eats it up.
4:05: Clark chucks a wrister on net from the top of the slot. Johnson gloves it.
2:58: Hey, another Penguins' power play! Let's see what new and creative way they can waste this. Hedman is called for interference against Dupuis. Michalek, Letang, Kovalev, Neal and Letant take the ice.
1:25: Um... what happened there? Kunitz crashes in on Rolsoon with Lundin and Clark hounding him. The puck comes loose to just above the crease. Letestu tries to sweep it into the cage but can't punch it by the right leg of a stretched out Roloson. Clark hits Kunitz into the right post and knocks the net loose.
0:58: Another two minutes wasted.
0:00: End of period. Ugh. Lightning 5, Penguins 0.
SECOND INTERMISSION

-What do you say? This is a train wreck. Nothing more. The Lightning was ready. The Penguisn weren't. That's why we'll have a Game 6.
-The Penguins just aren't sharp whatsoever. They're getting beat to loose pucks. They're losing one-on-one battles. Outside of a strong first 15 minutes or so, they have been awful.
-Anyone who wants to blindly blame Fleury about this is completely ignorant about the sport of hockey. He was left out to dry.
-The Penguins' power play is back on track and has returned ot its useless ways.
-The awakening of Steven Stamkos has totally changed things. Imagine where this series would be if he had contributed more in the first four games.
-At this point, the only thing for either team to accomplish is to avoid injuries.
-The Penguins have a 20-18 edge in shots.
-Kennedy leads the game with six shots.
-Stamkos leads the Lightning with three.
-Michalek leads the game with 16:56 of ice time.
-Hedman leads the Lightning with 15:55.
-The Penguins control faceoffs, 25-21 (54 percent).
-Adams is 6 for 7 (86 percent).
-Hall is 5 for 7 (71 percent).
-Fire Ray Shero.
-Hedman leads the game with four blocked shots.
-Martin leads the Penguins with two.
-Another generic IceTime cover probably isn't helping matters:

-You know who's to blame? This dolt:

(Kudos to EN reader Tim Titus for spotting this.)
THIRD PERIOD
18:46: Orpik airmails a slapper from the neutral zone on net. Roloson gloves it and freezes play.
18:31: Kovalev is nabbed for highl sticking Moore in the neutral zone. Adams, Talbot, Orpik and Michalek take the ice.
17:06: And the onslaught continues. Purcell controls the puck above the left circle and sneaks a cross ice pass to Kubina above the opposite circle. Kubina winds up and cranks a slapper which toasts Johnson over his glove hand. What a shot! Purcell and Bergeron get assists. Lightning 6-0.
16:01: Johnson and Bergenheim get tangled up to the left of the cage. Letang comes over and gives Bergenheim a cross check to the kidneys. Bergenheim takes a tumble. Orpik grabs Letang not wanting him to do anything stupid. Johnson gets a roughing minor. The announcement of the minor brings one of the loudest cheers of the day. Kennedy will serve the minor. Rupp, Adams, Michalek and Orpik take the ice.
14:15: Wow. Wow. Wow. This is like a power-play drill for the Lightning. Purcell takes a pass on the left wing wall. He immediately snaps off a pass through the slot to Kubina stationed above the crease. Kubina one-touches it by Johnson's left foot. Johnson had no prayer on that one. The Lightning is just abusing the Penguins on special teams. Purcell and Downie get assists. Lightning 7-0.
13:24: And the home fans get at least one thing to cheer about. Kovlev circles out of the the right wing corner and deals a pass to the top of the crease. Rupp is stationed there and re-directs it by Roloson's right leg. The Penguins offer a mild token celebration. Kovalev and Talbot get assists. Roloson doesn't get a shutout. The "Woo-Hoo!" song gets a shift. Lightning 7-1.
11:38: Chris Conner is still playing. He gains the offenive zone on the right wing, weaves his way through a defender towards the slot and loses the puck. Talbot recovers it in the left circle goes bleow the goal line and deals back to Conner positions in the left circle. Conner one-times it by a badly out-of-place Roloson. Conner created that with hs skating. Roloson heads to the bench to get an equipment issue addressed. Talbot and Letang get assists. This place has a little life.
11:14: Michalek tries to zip a pass up the ice from his blue line but Downie breaks it up. Unfortunately it hops up and strikes Downie in the face. Play is halted. Downie hops to his feet immedately and heads to the bench. He appears fine.
10:30: Even with the home team down by five goals and a quarter of the seats empty, there's a pretty strong "LET'S GO PENS!" chant going on.
10:39: Arron ahsam sis still play. The pushes the puck up one-on-tow against Bergeron and kbuina. he gets knockd to the ice b Kubina and crashes into the cage. No call. Play is halted as the net is dislodged.
8:49: Kennedy circles around the right circle and lifts a wrister over the cage.
8:14: Lecavalier taps a pass to the left wing for Gagne. Gagne gets behind Ben Lovejoy and has a clean look at the net. As Lovejoy hacks him with his stick, Gagne snaps off a wrister. Johnson kicks it out with his left leg. Lovejoy is sent off for slashingt. Michalke, Orpik, Dupuis and Adams take the ice.
7:23: Stamkos booms a slapper from above the right circle welllllll high and wide of the cage.
6:14: Talbot slams Hedman from behind into the right wing boards of the Lightning zone. Not a smart play by Talbot. He's sent off for boarding. Replays show him getting Hdeman from the side more than anything. The Lightning will have a brief five on three power play for two seconds. Orpik, Dupuis and Adams take the ice.
6:12: Lovejoy returns to the ice.
4:25: Another. Power. Play. Goal. Wow. Thompson rushes in on net from the right circle and pushes a backhander on net form the right circle. Johnson challenges and kicks it out. Bergenheim follows up on the rebound and shuffles a quick pass through the crease to Moore cutting int. Moore pushes it behind a helpless Johnson. What a display on the power play. To make matters worse, Letang is called for boarding Thompson. The Lightning go back on the power play. Bergenheim and Thompson get assists. Lightning 8-2.
3:34: Downie tries to play a puck in the crease with his hand. Play is blown dead. As he gets up. he pushes Orpik on top of Johnson who is laying on his stomach. A small scrum develops. A few penalties are doled out. Downie gets a roughing minor and a 10-minute misconduct. Orpik gets a 10-minute misconduct. Malone will serve the minor. Four-on-four for 1:09.
2:25: Letang's minor is killed. The Penguins will have a power play for 54 seconds.
1:41: Michalek booms a one-timer from above the left half wall. Thompson blocks it.
1:34: Downie's minor is killed.
0:52: Lovejoy chops a slapper from the right point. Roloson punches it away.
0:46: Moore is called for hooking. Kovalv, Staal, Neal, Michalek and Letang take the ice.
0:00: End of game. Lightning 8, Penguins 2.
POSTGAME

-The Penguins set a few records in this games. None of them good. First, they set a new franchise mark for largest margin of defeat in a home playoff game with six goals. The previous mark was five in three seperate games. The overall mark is seven goals in an 8-1 loss to the Islanders in 1982.
-Also, the Penguins set a new mark by allowing four power-play goals. The previous mark was three in eight different games.
-It's one thing to come out desperate for a win. It's one thing to be fighting for your playoff lives. It's quite another to just embarrass a team on its home ice. What the Lightning did today was just staggering.
-Tampa Bay dominated special teams. It dominated puck battles. And it dominated play in front of the net.
-The strange thing is, it's not like the Penguins came out flat or anything. They actually dominated this game for the first 15 minutes or so. Then the Lightning just happened to score one goal. Then another. Then another. And another. And another. All of a sudden, the rout was on.
-If there's anything good about this game, it's that it was over midway through the second period. It's not like the Penguins had their hearts ripped out with an overtime goal or something. They can stew over this loss for a good 48 hours and draw motivation from it.
-It seems like such a lame excuse, but the Penguins never do well in day games. They just stink when the sun is still shining.
-That said, how do you not question the Penguins' killer instinct? They had this game in control early on. The could have earned a few days rest. Then it just fell apart on them. Championship teams don't let things like that slip away.
-You have to give credit to the Lightning. They take advantage of everything the Penguins gave them. The Penguins gave them space and speed to work with in the offensive zone. And they gave them a ton of power plays obviously.
-The Penguins had a 33-25 lead in shots.
-Kennedy led the game with eight.
-Dupuis was the only Penguins skater who failed to get a shot on net.
-Gagne, Kubina, Moore and Stamos each led the Lightning with three.
-Fire Ray Shero.
-Michalek led the game with 26:30 of ice time.
-Brewer led the Lightnign with 21:05.
-The Penguins had a 35-34 edge in faceoffs (51 percent).
-Adams was 8 for 11 (73 percent).
-Hall was 6 for 9 (67 percent).
-Fire Ray Shero.
-Hedman led the game with five blocked shots.
-Martin led the Penguins with four.
-Kovalev recorded his 100th career postseason point.
-He is the 79th player in NHL history to reach that mark.
-Talbot (32) moved ahead of Joe Mullen (31) for 12th place on the team's all-time postseason scoring list.
