"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2010-11 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1990-91 season which led to the first Stanley Cup title in franchise history. We will look back on games on a particular date and catch up with former players, coaches, executives and media members who were a part or around that team.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 3-1 win against the Capitals in Game 4 of the Patrick Division final, April 21, 1991.
Late in the first period, at 18:01, the Penguins tied with when right winger Mark Recchi scored a power-play goal against goaltender Don Beaupre. Left winger Kevin Stevens and center Mario Lemieux netted assists.
After a scoreless second period, Stevens scored the eventual game-winning goal at 9:14 of the third period off assists from Recchi and Lemieux.
Left winger Phil Bourque secured the win with an empty net goal at 19:28 of the third. Recchi had the only assist.
Notes:
-Barrasso made 38 saves to earn the win.
-The three stars were 1.) Barrasso 2.) Johansson 3.) Stevens.
-The Penguins won despite only getting 19 shots on net.
-Recchi broke Lemieux's franchise record with a point in his his eighth consecutive postseason game.
-Penguins center Bryan Trottier tied former Islanders teammate Denis Potvin for second most career postseason games played with 185.
Also in the news that day:
-In Game 2 of the Adams Division Final, right winger Stephane Richer scored two goals for the Canadiens in Game 4 at the Montreal Forum. The series was tied, 2-2.
-Centerfielder Andy Van Slyke went 2 for 4 with a homerun and two RBI for the Pirates in a 7-3 win against the Montreal Expos at Olympic Stadium in Montreal.
