The Penguins, hockey and more, by the PG's Seth Rorabaugh. |
"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2010-11 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1990-91 season which led to the first Stanley Cup title in franchise history. We will look back on games on a particular date and catch up with former players, coaches, executives and media members who were a part or around that team.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 4-1 defeat of the Bruins in Game 3 of the Wales Conference final, May 5, 1991.
The Penguins won their first game of the series at the Civic Arena. They trailed the series, 2-1. Left winger Kevin Stevens, who guaranteed a series victory after a loss in Game 2, gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead 13:31 into the game with a goal against goaltender Andy Moog. Assists went to rookie defenseman Paul Stanton and center Ron Francis.
At 5:01 of the second period, Francis scored the eventual game-winning goal of assists from defenseman Larry Murphy and Stevens.
Just over five minutes later at the 10:24 mark, defenseman Raymond Bourque scored the Bruins' only goal against goaltender Tom Barrasso. Right winger Cam Neely and center Craig Janney had assists.
Less than 30 seconds later at 10:40, defenseman Grant Jennings scored to make it 3-1. Center Mario Lemieux and right winger Mark Recchi were credited with assists.
Lemieux scored an unassisted goal at 13:11 of the second period to finish the scoring.
Notes:
-Barrasso made 27 saves in the victory.
-The three stars were 1.) Lemieux 2.) Stevens 3.) Francis.
-Shortly after Jennings goal, Penguins defenseman Ulf Samuelsson hit Neely with a controversial knee-on-knee hit at the Penguins' blue line. There was no penalty on the hit. Bruins coach Mike Milbury protested by banging a stick on the boards in front of his team's bench.
-Before the game, Penguins forward Jay Caufield and Bruins forward Chris Nilan engaged in a shoving match near the entrance to the vistors locker room.
-Moog left the game after the second period due to the flu. He was replaced by goaltender Reggie Lemelin.
