"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2010-11 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1990-91 season which led to the first Stanley Cup title in franchise history. We will look back on games on a particular date and catch up with former players, coaches, executives and media members who were a part or around that team.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 4-1 defeat of the Bruins in Game 4 of the Wales Conference final, May 7, 1991.
The Penguins evened the series, 2-2, with a victory at the Civic Arena. Left winger Bob Errey gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead 8:49 into the game with a goal against goaltender Andy Moog. Assists went to center Mario Lemieux and right winger Mark Recchi.
At the 12:08 mark of the second period, right winger Joe Mullen score the eventual game-winning goal off assists from center Ron Francis and defenseman Grant Jennings.
Right winger Dave Christian scored the Bruins' only goal of the game against goaltender Tom Barrasso at the 8:38 mark of the third period. Right winger Peter Douris had the lone assist.
Less than two minute later at 10:23, Lemieux scored to make it 3-1. Recchi and Errey recorded assists.
A power-play goal by left winger Kevin Stevens at 17:22 secured the win. Francis and Mullen were credited with assists.

-Barrasso made 29 saves to earn the win.
-The three stars were 1.) Barrasso 2.) Lemieux 3.) Francis.
-Lemieux left the game with approximately three minutes left in regulation after he was slashed on the wrist by Bruins forward Chris Nilan. Following a fight with Recchi, Nilan was given a slashing minor, an intigator minor and a fighting major. Recchi also received a fighting major.
-Prior to the game, Bruins coach Mike Milbury referred to Penguins coach Bob Johnson as a "professor of goonism:"
Also in the news that day:
-Pitcher Randy Tomlin allowed one earned run and recorded five strikeouts in six innings of work for the Pirates in a 7-2 defeat of the defending World Series champion Cininnati Reds at Three Rivers Stadium. Shortstop Jay Bell went 2 for 4 with two RBIs for the Pirates.
