The Penguins, hockey and more, by the PG's Seth Rorabaugh. |
"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2010-11 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1990-91 season which led to the first Stanley Cup title in franchise history. We will look back on games on a particular date and catch up with former players, coaches, executives and media members who were a part or around that team.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 7-2 defeat of the Bruins in Game 5 of the Wales Conference final, May 9, 1991.
The Penguins responded at 7:55 of the first period with a breakaway goal by left winger Kevin Stevens against goaltender Andy Moog. Assists went to right winger Scott Young and defenseman Larry Murphy.
At the 12:04 mark, center Mario Lemieux scored his 10th goal of the postseason on a power play. Stevens and right winger Mark Recchi had assists.

Notes:
-Barrasso made 36 saves to record the win.
-The three stars were 1.) Stevens 2.) Lemieux 3.) Barrasso.
-The win was the Penguins' first at the Boston Garden all season. It was only their seventh victory in the building all-time.
-Bruins left winger Nevin Markwart left the game in the third period and was hospitalized when he suffered a concussion.
-Prior to the game, Bruins coach Mike Milbury said of Penguins coach Bob Johnson, "I think he's a little bit of a fraud. He has an ego so big, so huge, that he thinks he and only he knows anything about hockey. That's what's irksome to me, that he thinks he knows all there is to know about hockey. It's always lecture time with that guy. Talk to him about hockey? No. You have to sit and listen because he's always lecturing."
