The Penguins, hockey and more, by the PG's Seth Rorabaugh. |
-EN reader @zlancia spotted this very appropriate Brent Johnson "shersey" pictured to the right during last night's UFC event at Consol Energy Center.
-"They were really interested in him. They wanted to know what he's like off the ice, does he drink, does he party. They were really interested in details. ... I just said he's the easiest kid to deal with." - Dennis Duchesne, former minor coach for Penguins second-round draft pick Scott Harrington, on discussions he had with Penguins scouts.
-Penguins first-round draft pick Joe Morrow will make an appearance on WXDX-FM's (105.9) morning show today at 9:40 a.m. Click here to listen.
-Happy 37th birthday to former Penguins defenseman Eric Cairns. Acquired midway through the 2005-06 season from the Panthers in exchange for a draft pick, Cairns spent parts of two seasons with the Penguins. He appeared in a combined 28 games in those two seasons and recorded one goal as well as 92 penalty minutes. After missing all but one game in 2006-07 due to an injury, Cairns retired and took a position in player development with the Islanders. Cairns may be more famous for getting into a fight as an Islander with former Penguins forward Matthew Barnaby in the bowels of Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum during the 1999-2000 season:
-The Islanders extended qualifying offers to restricted free agent forwards Josh Bailey, Blake Comeau, Micheal Haley, Jesse Joensuu, defensemen Dylan Reese and Ty Wishart. Defenseman Jack Hillen did not receive an offer.
-"I think they're not far away from being a contender each and every year, and that, as a player, that's what you want, a chance to win the Stanley Cup each and every year." - Defenseman Robyn Regehr (right) joining the Sabres after a trade from the Flames this weekend.
-"This is a very important week for us [We went through] a lot of pain last year to get ourselves in this position. We earned the right now to do what we need to do to get this franchise turned around." - Panthers general manager Dale Tallon on the start of free agency Friday.
-After trading defenseman Brian Campbell and his big salary cap hit to the Panthers, the Blackhawks should have enough salary cap space to re-sign forward Patrick Sharp who is scheduled to an unrestricted free agent next summer.
-"He's just got everything you're looking for in a young hockey player." - Avalanche executive and former captain Joe Sakic on the club's first-round pick, Gabriel Landeskog.
-During this weekend's draft in the Xcel Energy Center, Wild owner Craig Leipold approached NHL commissioner Gary Bettman about his team hosting a Winter Classic. Bettman simply told him to make the playoffs.
-The Kings were finally able to trade forward Ryan Smyth (right) to the Oilers. In exchange, they received forward Colin Forbes and a seventh-round pick in 2012.
-The Coyotes acquired forward Marc-Andre Pouliot from the Lightning in exchange for a seventh-round draft pick.
-Phoenix went local with its seventh-round pick this weekend and drafted forward Zac Larraza, a native of Scottsdale, Ariz.
