The offer is in, and the clock is running.

Penguins general manager Ray Shero confirmed this evening that he has offered free agent right winger Jaromir Jagr a one-year contract -- he declined to divulge the financial aspects of the proposal -- and said he expect to learn Wednesday whether Jagr will accept it.

"We feel from the information we have and after seeing at world championships, that he's a guy who might be able to help us this coming season," Shero said. "We feel he's a guy who could help us this year, and retire as a Penguin."

He added that he does not know whether Jagr, 39, has received offers from any other teams.

Detroit has expressed interest in signing him, and Montreal is believed to have interest, as well.

Jagr's agent, Petr Svoboda, could not be reached for comment this evening.

Svoboda is certain, however, to be hearing from Shero Wednesday.

"Tomorrow," Shero said, "is decision day."

RW could go from big need to yet another position of strength for the Pens.

Now all we'd have to do is find something better than Niskanen.
