The Penguins have signed former Canadiens defenseman Alexandre Picard to a one-year two-way contract. In 43 games last season, Picard scored eight points (three goals, five assists).
Picard, who turns 26 today, has spent parts of six seasons in the NHL with the Canadiens, Hurricanes, Senators, Lightning and Flyers. In 236 career NHL games, he has 65 points (19 goals, 46 assists).
A native of Gatineau, Que., Picard, 6-foot-2, 220 pounds, was a third-round pick (No. 85 overall) by the Flyers in 2003.
EN Says: This is a signing for the sake of organizational depth. Picard has bounced back and forth between the NHL and AHL throughout most of his career.
With the organization losing Andrew Hutchinson and Corey Potter last week, Picard is someone who can step in and pick up those minutes for the AHL Penguins.
At the very least, he'll be around in September's training camp and help create some competition for the No. 5, 6 and 7 spots among the defensemen.
