-Brooks Orpik is apparently a combustible black or brownish-black sedimentary rock composed primarily of carbon along with variable quantities of other elements, chiefly hydrogen, with smaller quantities of sulfur, oxygen and nitrogen. Or he's just shilling for the coal industry:
-The Penguins' prospect development camp begins today.
-The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins re-signed defenseman Joey Mormina to a one-year contract. In 50 AHL games last season, he scored 11 points (two goals, nine assists).
-Happy 61st birthday to former Penguins goaltender and current goaltending coach Gilles Meloche (right). Acquired in the 1985 offseason in a deal which sent Marty McSorley, Tim Hrynewich and Craig Muni to the Oilers, Meloche spent the final three seasons of his 18-year NHL playing career with the Penguins. Platooning with Roberto Romano in 1985-86, Meloche appeared in 34 games and had a record of 13-15-5 with a 3.59 goals against average and .881 save percentage. In 1986-87, Meloche took over as the team's primary starter as he saw action in 43 games. He had a record of 13-19-7 with a 3.43 goals against average and .881 save percentage. His final season in the NHL was 1987-88 as he only appeared in 27 games and compiled an 8-9-5 record with a 4.09 goals against average and .868 save percentage. He retired in the 1987 offseason having appeared in 104 games for the Penguins with a record of 34-43-17, a 3.65 goals against average and .878 save percentage. Meloche rejoined the organization in 1989 with a front office role and eventually moved in his his current position as goaltending coach. A member of all three of the franchise's Stanley Cup championship teams, Meloche is the father of former Penguins forward Eric Meloche.
Northeast Division-The Senators signed former Sabres defenseman Tim Conboy to a one-year two-way contract.
-Ottawa also signed former Canucks defenseman Lee Sweatt (right) to a two-year two-way contract.
-Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau is talking about new goaltender Tomas Vokoun as if he'll be the starter in the fall.
-Hurricanes forward Brett Sutter pleaded guilty to a disorderly conduct charge stemming from an arrest after he punched an Arizona cab driver in November.
-The Red Wings re-signed goaltender Joey MacDonald to a two-year two-way contract.
-The Blue Jackets signed former Rangers forward Dane Byers to a one-year two-way contract.
-Former Blues forward Jaroslav Jirik, the first Czech player legally permitted to play in the NHL, died in a plane crash Monday in the Czech Republic. He was 71. Jirik's NHL career amounted to three games for the Blues in 1969-70.
-"I don't see why there's a reason he can't have his best year ever in the NHL." - Wild coach and former Penguins assistant coach Mike Yeo on the addition of forward Dany Heatley (right).
-The Ducks re-signed forward Dan Sexton to a two-year contract. The first year will be a two-way deal while the second year will have a salary cap hit of $550,000.
-Former Sharks/Senators/Kings/Avalanche defenseman Tom Preissing has joined Biel of the NLA in Switzerland.
